Oscar-winner Gene Kelly ("Singin' in the Rain," "An American in Paris") stars as one of two American hunters in Scotland who discover a mystical village that only materializes once every century. Co-starring Van Johnson ("Battleground," "Plymouth Adventure") and Cyd Charisse ("An American in Paris," "Singin' in the Rain"). Directed by Oscar-winner Vincente Minnelli ("Gigi," "Meet Me in St. Louis"). Featuring classic songs from Lerner and Loewe. Nominated for three Oscars.
Americans Jeff and Tommy, hunting in Scotland, stumble upon a village - Brigadoon. They soon learn that the town appears once every 100 years in order to preserve its peace and special beauty. The citizens go to bed at night and when they wake up, it's 100 years later. Tommy falls in love with a beautiful young woman, Fiona, and is torn between staying or going back to his hectic life in New York.

Wonderfully Romantic in everyway!Minnelli wanted to do this movie years earlier, but he couldn't. By the time he could it, they could only shoot it on a soundstage, but what a soundstage. Great colors, sets, and cinematography. Of course, it's the music and dance that really distinguish the film. All in all, this is a beautifully uplifting romantic musical starring Gene Kelly and Cyd Charisse: because there's a real chemistry between them. Brigadoon enthralls with such numbers as "Waitin' for My Dearie," "Bonnie Jean," and of course the spectacularly beautiful "Heather on a Hill." See if you don't hit the replay button a few times when these numbers end!.Score: 5/5
Missing Scenes and SongsThis is great movie but unfortunately like many of the versions of Brigadoon out there, it is lacking several scenes and songs. I remember seeing and hearing these scenes so I know they exist but they are missing from this less expensive release (the wedding vows, the songs "Come to me, Bend to me" and "There But for You Go I"). See this show on stage at some point to get the full effect of the beautiful music and story. Or buy the (gulp!) Laserdisc to get the entire show. At any rate, there is no better dancer than Gene Kelly and those who criticize the dancing should know that most of today's choreographer acknowledge their debt to Gene Kelly and his innovative moves..Score: 5/5
Lovee this movie!!One of the last great hollywood musicals. when you think of it historically, it's sort of a downer--gene kelly was in his forties, his famous crow's feet uncomfortably visable, his voice a little less youthful--but nevertheless, it gets your spirit up. with its crazily artsy set design and the old fashioned timeless tale of two people falling in love, its bound to get your spirits soaring. as the music goes, most of it's traditional celtic stuff, of course there has to be one hollywood number, and gene kelly does brilliantly with "almost like being in love." in short, at least rent it. it'll brighten your day, and get you yearning for more movies made like this one..Score: 5/5
Perfectly corny and wonderful!!I love this move! Be warned the songs are cheesy and the acting is laughable but it has a wonderful story line!! The songs will grow on you and then you wont be able to stop singing them!! If you ever get a chance go to Scotland and when you see the "heather on the hills", think of this movie and belt out the lyrics! I did!! Watch this movie!! Rent it if you have to, its a classic that will stay in your heart and mind forever!!.Score: 5/5
SpectacularThis movie is absolutely wonderful. It is an amazing classic, not only for teh acting, but also for teh great singing and acting that goes along with it. I fyou do not want to buy this movie, at least rent it. It will bring a smile to your face..Score: 5/5
One of the weaker Gene Kelly MusicalsThis film is takes itself too seriously. Most of its attempts at comic relief come in the form of drunken behavior by Van Johnson. The songs are forgettable, the dancing is minimal, and the dialog is horrible..Score: 2/5
Very good transfer!Apparently this print is lacking some of the material that was origionally filmed, but it looks very very good and in it's correct Cinemascope aspect ratio. The best part of this film (besides the gorgeous sound stage sets)(they really look great!) is Kelly's magnificent choreography! His masculine ballet style burns up the screen throughout the movie. I had never seen this film before so I'm really glad to have seen it with such a good presentation, (I can imagine how badly it would be hacked and chopped if seen on TV). Fortunately, like the other reviewer, I have Laserdisc equipment so i'm going to look for that version to see it uncut. It is a 1953 film so some younger viewers may find it a bit dated but there is no denying that due to Kelly's work, this is a genuine masterpiece! Still very charming after all these years! The only reson I took off a star is because of that missing footage. Maybe Apple can persuade the studio to provide a restored version in the future..Score: 4/5
