Difficult to Live Up to Its PredecessorDespite some superb acting from both Russel Crowe and Helen Mirren (no surprises there) and a gripping story of murder, conspiracy and investigative journalism, State of Play can't shine from beneath the shadow cast by the original British television series. Casting ruins itThe plot of this movie was actually interesting and if the actors chosen to play the characters had been in any way appropriate to the roles it could have been good. As it was Ben Affleck is not believable as a politician/anything more serious than a frat boy, Rachel McAdams seems to spend the entire movie grinning at inappropriate times and bouncing around like Reporter Barbie and Russell Crowe is wasted on this movie.
