Boris Karloff's legendary performance as The Mummy has become a landmark in the annals of screen history. When Egyptian mummy Im-Ho-Tep is accidentally revived after 3,700 years, it is revealed in a flashback that he was a high priest, embalmed alive for trying to revive his true love after she had been sacrificed. Alive again, he sets out on an obsessive - and deadly - quest to find his lost love. The Mummy remains a masterpiece not only of the genre, but of all time.

Dashing legionnaire Rick O'Connell stumbles upon the hidden ruins of Hamunaptra while in the midst of a battle to claim the area in 1920s Egypt. It has been over three thousand years since former High Priest Imhotep suffered a fate worse than death as a punishment for a forbidden love—along with a curse that guarantees eternal doom upon the world if he is ever awoken.

Scared the begeezus out of me!Of course, by today's standards it would seem corny... some of the acting is a bit questionable, though Karoff is always superb, and the story contrived (but compared to todays unimaginative, copycat, remake and sequel successes, at least it was original). It is the quintessential, daddy of them all, mummy movies. I saw this as a young kid and of all the big monsters of the day, Frankenstein, the Wolf Man, Dracula, the Creature From the Black Lagoon.... I was afraid only of the Mummy. Great film, not so great transferNeedless to say, the movie is terrific. My issue is that the transfer is just not very good. The picture is only slightly better than the DVD and retains many artifacts and imperfections throughout. This is certainly not the excellent transfer featured on the blu ray. This is advertised as HD and I won’t claim it isn’t, but like the other Universal Classic Monster films in the iTunes Store, the picture quality is just mediocre. Additionally Universal has added great extras to both the DVD and Blu Rays that are completely missing in the iTunes Store. I have to wonder if Universal will only allow the new transfers and the extra content on physical media. Movie 5* Transfer 3* (at best).JAH721Score: 4/5

Love this movieThe first time I watched this movie, I loved it. It only gets better everytime I watch it. Borris Karloff just nails the role as the mummy, as well as being his first speaking roll. This mummy isn't wrapped up in bandages, and mindlessly kills people, like most people think. A great classic, and one of Karloff's best roles..SpstudiosScore: 4/5

Ahead of its timeWhen someone mentions The Mummy, the first thing in the minds of some would be a bandaged ghoul obediantly assassinating the archaeologists who disturbed his tomb. He is usually under the control of an Kemetist Egyptian priest, who breathes life into the mummy via a sacred scroll's spell or some sort of magical soup compound. The only components of the genre found in the film that started it all are the ressurection scroll and the methodical killing of the archaeologists. Imhotep is a man, not a monster, and his goals are not evil, but he will do whatever he deems necessary to acheive the goal of sacrificing a wealthy young woman who bears the reincarnated spirit of Imhotep's lover, Ankhensenamon. Karloff's betrayal of the ancient High Priest of Karnak is captivating as the Mummy's gaze, and the supporting cast is believable. All of the characters are sympathetic, which guarantees that in the end, you will feel bad for the Mummy, thoguh you know that you shouldn't. Whther you feel happy for the heroes is something you will need to decide on your own. All in all, it is an excellent classic..KhazemiScore: 4/5

Karloff is the mummy!By the way folks, don't think that this is a mummy that walks around and strangles people to death while wearing bandages (that's the sequels that follow a different mummy, Kharis). This one follows Im-Ho-Tep, a mummy who wants to resurrect his dead girlfriend. This is a good movie and I recommend it to anybody. Before anybody watches the remake, I suggest that you watch this movie and perhaps one of those with the other Mummy, Kharis, to see the similarities. Enjoy!.LaughingGodzillaScore: 5/5

Karloff is the King!The Mummy is my favorite Universal monster and this is my favorite film. No Lon Chaney walking at 1/2 mile an hour here - boy those victims are dumb, and SLOW! - you see Karloff made up as the Mummy for about 30 seconds but boy is he creepy. And man does Karloff bring Im-Hotep alive - he he - this is one nasty 3000 year old dude folks - do not mess with him. He is a man on a mission and its to get his old girlfriend Zita Johann - very good here - back. Zita really does look sort of exotic and fits right in. Of course, Edward Van Sloan is here as Dr. Mueller, of Vienna. Wow, this is a great film. And you even feel a little sorry for Karloff - 3000 years in hell for loving the Pharoh's daughter seems a little stiff, and so is Karloff after 3000 years. Check it out. A movie ahead of its time - well made, well acted, well directed and simply well done. These films went on to become Monsters-R-Us but the originals, Frankenstein, Dracula and the Mummy are darn good films with some real thought in them. And Karloff can act too - its forgotten but check him out as an actor in Dracula and Frankenstein - he has talent. Unlike, say, House of Dracula, featuring the Hunchback nurse and the usual suspects.
