He has a firm handshake, a ready smile, and some strange ideas about friendship. His name is Lester Long and when the bodies start piling up he generously decides to share the blame. Now the F.B.I. has got the whole town under observation, and Lester has put his new friend Clay over a barrel. The only way for Clay to set things straight is to beat one twisted individual at his own game of deceit and double-crossing.
Clay is a young man in a small town who witnesses his friend, Earl kill himself because of the ongoing affair that Clay was having with the man's wife, Amanda. Feeling guilty, Clay now resists the widow when she presses him to continue with their sexual affairs. Clay inadvertently befriends a serial killer named Lester Long, who murders the widow in an attempt to "help" his "fishing buddy."

Dark, Twisted and full of humor (in my top 20)Vince Vaughn and Joaquin Phoenix together, the way they feed off each other make this one of my top 20 movies. If you have not had the privilege of previously viewing this movie 'watch it'!! It is NOT a family film or for people who are easily offended or who don't like twists and intrigue (if you Love dark, twisted and seriously creepy movies you will love this). This film you will want to purchasing because you will want to watching it and re-watching it and re-watching it again and again. It will shock you then surprise you it will have you rolling with laughter in one scene and make you gasp in the very next scene. Of all of the films that both of these actors have preformed in, this is my favorite Vince and my favorite Phoenix movie. I have found it is difficult to find on any cable, satellite or On-Demand providers. I know you will enjoy this INSANE movie as much I have enjoyed it again and again..Score: 5/5

Definitely overlooked.I've loved this movie since the first time I saw it, and have watched it more times than I can count! It's funny and disturbing at the same time. Vince Vaughn is much more disturbing in this movie than any others I've seen him in, and Janeane Garofalo is hysterical in her understated way. Phil Morris, Janeane Garofalo's FBI agent partner, while having barely any lines in the movie, is a wonderful actor in this picture. His facial expressions are far better than having him recite lines that Garofalo does perfectly on her own. And Vince Vieluf, as a sheriff's deputy named Barney, is hysterical. See this movie!!!!!.Score: 5/5
Best movie of 1998I can not believe this movie still isn’t getting the kudos it deserves. The best cast at the top of their game in a well written extremely enjoyable twisty thriller. I highly recommended it then and I STILL HIGHLY RECOMMEND this movie. It holds up very well. Great story and a GREAT SOUNDTRACK!!!! Worth it just for the eclectically wonderful soundtrack. Watch it, watch it, WATCH IT! Vince Vaughn is unbelievably charming and sinister, no one else could have played Lester Long. Joaquin Phoenix is so good at this character you believe he IS him. And Janeane Garofalo was so good with her dry delivery. It’s a must see for people who enjoy a good twisty thriller. All I can say is ENJOY!!!.Score: 5/5
