Brendan Frye is a loner, someone who knows all the angles but has chosen to stay on the outside. When the girl he loves turns up dead, he is determined to find the "who" and "why" and plunges into the dark and dangerous social strata of rich girl Laura, intimidating Tug, drug-addled Dode, seductive Kara, and the ominous Pin. But who can he really trust? These are the ingredients of Brick, a gritty and provocative thriller that critics describe as "a clever, twist-filled whodunit!" (Claudia Puig, USA Today)
After a phone call from his ex-girlfriend, teenage loner Brendan Frye learns that her dead body was found. Vowing to solve her murder himself, he must infiltrate high-school cliques that he previously avoided. His search for the truth brings him before some of the school’s roughest characters.

Just like sitting through Chaucer again. While the plot was interesting enough the teen-center-of-the-universe world view was idiotic which was then topped off with a bizarre made-up language that nobody uses. It was a little quirky the first 10 minutes and then it just started grinding on me. By the end of the move I was just plain worn out trying to understand the words and why anyone not blasted on drugs would talk this way. Apparently just to annoy the audience. Maybe rent this if you can't find anything else or if you're trying to annoy yourself but really not a buy kind of movie..Score: 3/5
So originalThe first time i saw this movie it was like being hit by a ton of, well... bricks. It's totally not what you expect, but in a really great way. It breaks free of all the normal, boring, predictable plotlines. Definitely worth not only an initial look, but a second and third as well!.Score: 5/5

Flawless NoirJohnson's sharp, witty dialogue, the subtle twists and turns, and the sleek storyline that could be lifted and transposed into any period, with any age group, is shining proof that his command of the Noir genre is pitch perfect. Levitt was fantastic in the role of the hard-boiled detective, and Zehetner was flawless as the femme fatale. This film reminded me of many Noir classics, but especially the Coen Brothers' "Millers Crossing," with it's dialogue and many duplicitous plot twists. Johnson already has some terrific writing/directing credits to his name since this film, from "Breaking Bad" to "Terriers," and of course "The Brothers Bloom." His career will be one to watch. An amazing new talent. This film is a must see for any fan of Noir Cinema, or anyone who enjoys a good mystery and watching the birth of fantastic new talent. For those who were unable to reconcile the dialogue with the high-school setting, think Shakespeare done in different settings, such as Hawke's "Hamlet" or DiCaprio's "Romeo & Juliet." You have to let your immagination go, and enjoy a work of art for what it is, in any setting..Score: 5/5
Slick wordsmithing, refreshing creativity, poignant taleDon't let the teen actors fool you: this film is suitable for adult audiences. It is a potent concoction of clever wordplay, nostalgic themes, and melancholic heart. *Brick* is appropriate viewing as a satisfying wind-down on a sleepless night or a sympathetic companion after a rough day. The more times that I see it, the richer the experience becomes. I highly recommend this film to anyone who enjoys mystery, creativity, and the power of words. Of course, it also helps if you are willing to let directors take artistic license. For these teen characters are not really teenagers but rather props used to reshape noir. But unlike most films of this genre, *Brick* delivers unusually gratifying closure..Score: 5/5

A student filmThis movie reminds me of a student film. It' s like the director talked an acting class into doing a student film. The world this movie takes place in is solely populated by teenagers except for two adults who have extremely short bit parts. The "teenagers" are played by twenty somethings. The dialogue would be from hard luck adults in their thirties and forties. I see what the director tried to do and he did a good job up to a point. The problem is that it doesn't work for me. That rotten tomato reviewer is right. The movie has a lot of conceit. The whole premise is too cute for it's own good..Score: 2/5
