Young hobbit Frodo Baggins, after inheriting a mysterious ring from his uncle Bilbo, must leave his home in order to keep it from falling into the hands of its evil creator. Along the way, a fellowship is formed to protect the ringbearer and make sure that the ring arrives at its final destination: Mt. Doom, the only place where it can be destroyed.

Frodo of the Nine Fingers...This film is totally classic. My brother and I used to watch it over and over again when we were kids.
This film is totally dated--from the animation, to the voice acting, to the musical score, so people looking for a more narrow cineman experience (aka: typical Hollywood films (which, by the way, there is nothing wrong with. I watch movies to be entertained--sometimes mindlessly, and sometimes engagingly).
As for anyone who is looking for a version of a book retold through 1970s vision, this is totally it. The film's score sticks with you well past the end; the voice casting fits the animated characters; the animation is a style reminiscent of 70s fairytale art mixed with a kind of stained-glass appeal that I really enjoyed, and the story unfolds simply, yet intriguingly, so that you stick with it until the end.
There are a few loose ends-seemingly random characters--that come in and out of the story--but I felt that way about Tolkien's work to begin with, so it didn't really bother me.
Overall, for its creativity, obvious hard work at recreating what many consider a masterpiece, and I think they did a pretty entertaining job, and I'm glad this one's still popping up now and then :3.KaythrinScore: 4/5

Save your time and moneyPoor quality animation, poor character development, choppy story telling, they make Sam into a bumbling moron. They don’t even finish the story! This seriously ends at the end of the battle at Helms Deep, and finishes with “and so the forces of evil were driven from middle earth by the friends of Frodo!” Just so bad..Cheated for the last time.Score: 1/5
Undervalued ClassicI am in the minority, I am sure, in saying I think this film is not only better than Peter Jackson's trilogy, but much better. The voice work is far superior to the badly miscast group of actors. The animation, while crude at times, still captures the look and feel of the novels. The score is vastly superior, as well. I watched Jackson's film this past weekend and all it did was reinforce how bad they are, at least to me.
This film is incomplete and leaves loose ends, to be sure, but the ending fight at Helm's Deep is more satisfying than any battle in the Jackson films. I wish I didn't feel that way because I wanted more than anything to love the live action version of what I consider the greatest works of the imagination ever penned. Unfortunately, I didn't and I would much rather watch this animated version of LOTR..Musicala1Score: 5/5
I stil like itI remember going to see this in the movie theatre with my mom. I remember waiting in line and being super excited. I was only 7 and hadn't read the books yet, but it was still incredible to see this kind of thing (elf, wizards, etc.) animated. Back then there wasn't really anything else like it and if you were a fan of this kind of thing you were pretty stoked. I still to this day enjoy it..NightendayScore: 4/5
A Rotoscoped ClassicIf you have seen Disney's "Snow White and the Seven Dwarves", you've seen Rotoscoping. Many of the classic 30's era Betty Boop cartoons, the modern psycho-thriller: "A Scanner Darkly", and even the 80's afternoon cartoon hit He-Man all used Rotoscoping. Ralph Backshi was a master, and while what we see today of his '78 classic may seem dated and low budget, pleast keep in mind that the artform Max Fleischer gave to the animation industry is forever relevant to today's cinematic animation. This is a classic for all lovers of animation, whether it be cell, cg, or yes, even rotoscoped.

I would not be so quick to bash this movie!!Now obviously this version of LOTR is not as awesome as Peter Jackson's trilogy, however thats not really a fair comparison. I find this to be a really good version of LOTR. Despite the fact that it only covers the first 2 books this is one of the best cartoons I have ever seen, in fact I don't really think they treated this like a little kids movie. One thing I do like better about this version is that they kept it more true to the book, also I like this Frodo Baggins much better than the Elijah Wood one, less wimpy and more brave and once again more like the book. Wow...Cant believe I just paid 3 dollars for this movie... prolly one of the worst movie i have ever seen... the only reason this got one star from me was because I had too.. it should really have negative stars... don't rent or buy it.. if you want the best cartoon version then get the orginal hobbit movie.... AwesomePeople say its not as good as Peter Jackson. But really Peter Jackson's took so much from this movie. Camera angles and such. This even follows the original story more closely. OkayDon't get me wrong, Ralph Bakshi is a master and always makes unique features (I love Cool World with Brad Pitt). But I would rather watch the live action Peter Jackson version with Elijah Wood. Much more interesting to me. And the problem I have with this movie is that it only covers the first two books and not the Return of the King. Why make a movie based on an original trilogy of books if you are not going to end it properly? That never made sense to me. We want to see Frodo fight with Golum and then watch the ring get destroyed. We want to see the penultimate moment.
