Forty years ago, Harriet Vanger disappeared from a family gathering on the island owned and inhabited by the powerful Vanger clan. Her body was never found, yet her beloved uncle is convinced it was murder and that the killer is a member of his own tightly knit but dysfunctional family. He employs disgraced financial journalist Mikael Blomkvist (Michael Nyqvist) and the tattooed and troubled but resourceful computer hacker Lisbeth Salander (Noomi Rapace) to investigate. When the pair link Harriet’s disappearance to a number of grotesque murders from almost forty years ago, they begin to unravel a dark and appalling family history. But the Vanger’s are a secretive clan, and Blomkvist and Salander are about to find out just how far they are prepared to go to protect themselves.

This English-language adaptation of the Swedish novel by Stieg Larsson follows a disgraced journalist, Mikael Blomkvist, as he investigates the disappearance of a weary patriarch's niece from 40 years ago. He is aided by the pierced, tattooed, punk computer hacker named Lisbeth Salander. As they work together in the investigation, Blomkvist and Salander uncover immense corruption beyond anything they have ever imagined.

Great flickGreat flick! I rented this to watch on my iPad while I was recovering from surgery. I've read the three Lisbeth Salanbder books, so I was prepared for the normal let-down when Hollywood does a book based movie. NOT SO! Terrible, just bad filmmakingToo bad that these Swedish movies did not live up to the books. The lead actor is terrible - what happened to the publisher guy being a dreamboat? Didn't they read the books before casting? And Noomi Rapace is just one note all the way, somebody's idea of a goth that has no basis in reality. Just dreadful, and so cheaply made, it's an insult to the audience. Get David Fincher's much better film with the gorgeous Daniel Craig and Rooney Mara as a Salander with a range of emotions..NYKnowsScore: 1/5

Foreign Cinema at its Finest!What can really be said at the end of the day? Compelling characters? Check! A great, simple plot with a twist? Check! Fine performances from everyone, including its leads? Check! Fantastic direction? Check Check! Say what you will, but TGWTDT will always be of the finest foreign films released in recent times. It says what it has to say and wastes no time in doing it. And Noomi Rapace is one talented woman who shines (and I'm glad she's shining just as bright in her recent work). PS. People who complain about having to read subtitles need to grow up. The only times subtitles appear are in dialogue scenes, and action scenes barely have any. Either learn how to read fast so you don't have to worry about "missing important stuff", or just go away and don't watch if you're that big of a whiner. Simple. P.S.S. For an even better experience, iTunes now has the full, extended edition of the film, making it more faithful to its source material..UnobstructedspaceScore: 5/5
