John Wayne and Dean Martin star as a Western sheriff and his recovering alcoholic deputy who, along with a small ragtag group of men and women, refuse to release a suspected murderer from jail, even though they are surrounded and greatly outnumbered by gunmen.
The sheriff of a small town in southwest Texas must keep custody of a murderer whose brother, a powerful rancher, is trying to help him escape. After a friend is killed trying to muster support for him, he and his deputies must find a way to hold out against the rancher's hired guns until the marshal arrives. In the meantime, matters are complicated by the presence of a young gunslinger - and a mysterious beauty who just came in on the last stagecoach.

If you are a Dean Martin fan, watch is movie. Otherwise don't waste your money.As a disclaimer, I am a huge, massive Dean Martin fan. In my mind, Dean Martin was The Entertainer of the 20th Century, even beyond Frank Sinatra. Also, as a disclaimer, I have never been a John Wayne fan. His stuff was too "cookie-cutter," stereotypical and male dominated. So, I like this movie because Dean Martin was incredible. He plays a louse of an alcoholic who redeems himself only at the last threads of the movie. How many people as big as Dean Martin would take such a role? That is why I think Dean Martin was the greatest. According to Wiki-pedia, John Wayne made "Rio Bravo" in response to the movie "High Noon." "Actor John Wayne disliked the film because he felt it was an allegory for blacklisting, which he actively supported. In his Playboy interview from May 1971, Wayne stated he considered High Noon "the most un-American thing I’ve ever seen in my whole life"[7] and went on to say he would never regret having helped blacklist liberal screenwriter Carl Foreman from Hollywood." This movie is very cookie-cutter, typical of John Wayne movies. It is titled "Rio Bravo," which is the Mexican name of the Rio Grande. Believe me, there was not a single scene that included the Rio Grande or any river or dash of water. If it were not for Dean Martin and Pedro Gonzalez-Gonzalez, the movie would be a total dud not worthy of a single star. Even Angie Dickinson's character was so stereotypical, I found myself almost laughing at her scenes. I barely recognized her because she is a brunette, and I only know her as a blond. Her character was so rambling and pathetic and whining, I was almost embarrassed to watch. Of course, she throws herself to John Wayne. Ricky Nelson had a role here, but I didn't feel that he was much of an actor. His role was stereotypical as a gunslinger, and he barely had more than two moods in the whole movie. He looked barely more than 18 years old, but was supposedly so type of experienced cowboy and gunslinger. I did not buy it. If you like Dean Martin, and want to see everything he did, watch this movie. Otherwise, do not waste your money..Score: 3/5
One the Dukes Best and Possibly One of the Greatest Westerns of AllThis film is a true classic. John Wayne always played John Wayne but he always had the best roles under director John Ford and Howard Hawks. Rio Bravo deals with the classics of the western bravery, guts, as well as character drama. Not a simple film by any means this film has a Sheriff (Wayne) trying to hold things together against vicious criminals while he has a drunkard deputy (Martin) whom Wayne has to help come to his senses and get his respect back, a peg legged jailer, and a cocky but confident youngester named Colorado. This mixed in with a femme-fatale (Dickinson) who plays a stellar role as the not-so-innocent flare for John Wayne sheriff. Rio Bravo is a triumph and if you enjoy good Westerns you should defiently watch this film. Its one of the best of all times..Score: 5/5

I NEVER ever tire of this movie!This film is definitely in my top ten! The highlight was Dean Martin singing a capella with Ricky Nelson My Rifle, My Pony and Me. So sweet!
