Academy Award winners Robin Williams, Al Pacino and Hilary Swank star in a thriller set in the land of the midnight sun, where a the mind of even a tough cop can be threatened by Insomnia. Under the glare of the permanent Alaska sun, two veteran Los Angeles police officers close in on their suspect in the murder of a teenage girl. But when officer Will Dormer (Pacino) accidentally shoots his partner, their murder suspect, reclusive novelist Walter Finch (Williams), witnesses the shooting--and blackmails Dormer. Now, as an idealistic local detective (Swank) investigates the case, and the stakes rise, Dormer's sanity begins to falter.
Detectives Jonas and Erik are called to the midnight sun country of northern Norway to investigate a recent homicide, but their plan to arrest the killer goes awry, and Jonas mistakenly shoots Erik. The suspect escapes, and a frightened Jonas pins Erik's death on the fugitive. Jonas continues to pursue the killer as he seeks to protect himself; however, his mounting guilt and the omnipresent sun plague him with an insomnia that affects his sanity.

Fantastic MovieThis movie is fantastic, but be warned. Despite that iTunes advertises "Insomnia" the audiobook by Stephen King, this movie has nothing to do with Stephen King's book. Not even based on it. Don't get me wrong, I love Stephen King, and Insomnia is a fantastic book. I just don't want anyone disappointed by either, thinking that the two are related in any way at all..Score: 5/5

Magnificent, riveting and gorgeousThe suspense is built with meticulous ingenuity. The story telling is totally believable and it pulses between patient and urgent. During the most violent sequences the surroundings close in on the characters, trapping them and magnifying the already vivid fear. During the quieter more tension-building sequences the surroundings expand into the most astonishing vast beauty, its breathtaking power oblivious to the characters' increasingly desperate conflicts. The film's ultimate point of view remains fascinatingly inscrutable. Robin Williams is brilliant! Al Pacino is brilliant! Hilary Swank is brilliant! I'd say this thing is gripping from start to finish, but the truth is that this film has continued to grip me, haunt me really, long after it ended..Score: 5/5

Completely underrated genre masterpiecePeople forget that Batman/Inception helmer Christopher Nolan can actually direct. Here we have a sublimely minimalist detective thriller where the crime merely serves as a setting for the disturbing psyches of the two lead actors. Pacino puts forth one of the best roles of his career matched only by the menacing Williams, playing against type and stealing the show with minimal screen time. Pfister, as well, does what I think is the most brilliant work of his career as a cinematographer, making the Alaskan, (actually Squamish, BC, the real filming location), landscape part of the story, doing wonders with natural light. A minimalist, underrated masterpiece perfect in every way. Not for the faint of heart, but required viewing for cinema lovers..Score: 5/5
