In the year of Superman Returns, Superman II starring Christopher Reeve also returns - with a totally different beginning and resolution. With Jor-El (Marlon Brando in recently discovered footage) in key scenes that amplify Superman lore and deepen the profound relationship between father and son. With different Lois Lane (Margot Kidder) schemes to unmask Clark Kent as Superman. With...well, with so many changes, large and small, that this Superman II is an eye-opening alternate experience. Director Richard Donner began shooting his vision of Superman II while concurrently filming Superman The Movie. Now, for the first time, his never-before-seen vision is here. And it's a must for every Superman fan, an important addition to the legend of the Man of Steel.
Superman agrees to sacrifice his powers to start a relationship with Lois Lane, unaware that three Kryptonian criminals he inadvertently released are conquering Earth.

A historical curiosityYou need to watch this film more as "supplemental material" viewing—because if you watch it to be a replacement to the theatrical release, you'll be very disappointed at two aspects of the ending. However, the establishing scene with Lois and Clark in the Daily Planet is probably the most satisfying new content, and portrays her as a more contemplative character, rather than someone with questionable personality choices. (Jimmy Olson gets more screen time too.) Marlon Brando's scenes are an interesting curiosity, and those who have seen the theatrical cut will know how his lines were redone for Kal-El's mother as a replacement. Finally, this version eliminates Lois's conspicuous smoking, though some product placement obviously couldn't be removed. Watch it as a historical filmmaking document, not as a reboot..Score: 3/5
This would've been great. The Superman movies are fun to watch. They are comical in the spirit of comic books. But this movie, this version would have changed the way people viewed Superman forever. It's hard to name what isn't better about this movie than the version they went with. This movie was edited as best they could get with what they had, which today would be about as good as "copy and paste." My only disappointment was the ending. I don't like how either version ended. I think though that if the ending of this movie had been cut about five or ten minutes sooner, the rest of the franchise could've gone in a better direction. I still give it five stars because there was too much that was good in this movie to ignore. The story made more sense blending the first movie to this version. At the very least, I recommend renting it..Score: 5/5
BlasphemyThis attempt at allowing us to see what the film was supposed to be should have been kept a secret. The real heroes are the ones who make the Superman movies what they are. The story is one thing, but to make it the flowing, fun, thrilling success that it is, takes talent. We see that this is true, because this attempt - the Richard Donner cut is a pathetic joke. Obviously this would have never made it to the big screen, because it is released as if it was put together by a high school kid in his basement head quarters. This movie was a waste of money and time. What this purchase did teach me, though, is that the movies we see in the theatre are true treasures. There is no substitute for talent..Score: 1/5
The REAL Superman IIAs far as I'm concerned, the Superman II that was released in theaters should never have been done. It pales in comparison to the Donner Cut. Donner directed both the first movie and II side-by-side and directed many of the scenes for II while doing the first one. What you have here is basically an entirely new movie (with some Lester scenes to fill in the gaps). Another interesting fact about the Donner Cut is that it comes with the original ending...and ending that was NOT supposed to be in the first movie (hint hint). Great film all around. It syncs up perfectly with the ending of the first one. Donner was truly on to something...it's a shame the studio fired him before he finished..Score: 5/5

What a dud!Man, for all the hoopla around the Lester/Donner controversy, you would think that this movie would at least have some arguable merits to its name. No. The opening is so cheesy, cheap and fast, spliced together from lame bits of Superman The Movie, that it looks like a “last week on Superman” opener of a TV show. The original opening sequence, with Lois Lane and the bomb on the Eiffel Tower actually contributes something to the movie and the plot, while this just opens the movie with a “meh". Likewise, the bizarre, tacked-on end of this movie, where Superman goes round and round the world and reverses time ALL OVER AGAIN like he did in Superman 1, and this time FOR NO APPARENT REASON, just makes it feel like a monkey edited this! (Oddly, the reverse-time scene was designed for this movie and then moved to Superman 1, but it actually works in 1 because LOIS LANE DIES and Superman can’t stand that. All it does in S2 is make cleanup less expensive!) The crappy editing, incredibly bad continuity problems — Clark goes back and forth from one pair of glasses to another in THE SAME SCENE — and complete contempt for narrative coherence really make me wonder why this was even released — not to mention the huge plotholes it already had. (Why, for example, does Superman even need to get rid of his powers to begin with? And why doesn’t Lois even try to stop him? Not remotely credible.) Anyway, if you ever hear that anyone prefers “The Richard Donner Cut,” that should be your signal to quietly back away from that person and put as much distance between the two of you as you can for a long time. That person, like whoever cobbled together this dog’s dinner edit, is dangerously unhinged..Score: 1/5
