It’s not human. Yet. From the producers of Dawn of the Dead comes the chilling prelude to John Carpenter’s cult classic film. When paleontologist Kate Lloyd (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) travels to an isolated outpost in Antarctica for the expedition of a lifetime, she joins an international team that unearths a remarkable discovery. Their elation quickly turns to fear as they realize that their experiment has freed a mysterious being from its frozen prison. Paranoia spreads like an epidemic as a creature that can mimic anything it touches will pit human against human as it tries to survive and flourish in this spine-tingling thriller.
In the winter of 1982, a twelve-man research team at a remote Antarctic research station discovers an alien buried in the snow for over 100,000 years. Soon unfrozen, the form-changing creature wreaks havoc, creates terror... and becomes one of them.

Outstanding PrequelWhy are people whining about this film being too similar to the original in tone and goriness? What set the 1982 film apart was it's tone and goriness! This film has a very good cast, strong directing and great creature effects, it is also very respectful of the original and it is obvious that the filmmakers went to great lengths to tell a very accurate story of what happened to the Norwegian outpost prior to the events of the John Carpenter classic. If you feel that no film will ever rival the 1982 original, fine! Don't waste your time and go watch it again, but if you want to see another Thing film and have fun, then enjoy. It's such a shame this version didn't get the fan support it richly deserved, since now we will likely see no more films in the series..Score: 4/5

Remake that makes me want to hurlWhenever I saw that this was coming to theaters, I was ecstatic because I'm such a huge fan of the 1982 movie and that it was a prequel that showed what happened to the Norweigan camp. However, I was disgusted by the result of it. The cast was terrible (with the exception of Mary Elizabeth Winstead), the CGI effects were inferior to the make-up effects of the original, and it didn't have the tension or fear of the original..Score: 1/5

So, so disappointing.Firstly, John Carpenters "The Thing" is a masterpeice, and I have no idea why the hell they would want to touch something so perfect. It rivals "Alien" as the greatest horror film of all time. Second, this film is decent in the beginning, and has a solid cast, but oh my god, by the time you reach the middle, it's a boring retread of the 1980's "Thing" and every other horror since, and the ending is one of the most eye-rolling, throw-your-beer at the screen endings in a long time.
