Really bad directingWhere this movie went wrong was the directing. It had the makings of an extremely well made movie. The director was given a sure thing and blew it! Let's hope he never directs again. Even with the poor directing, this movie is enjoyable given Steve Martin, Jack Black and Owen Wilson. Those three need to make another movie together. Open your mind!This movie was a fantastic movie. It didn't focus too much on the birds to make it a bird documentary, and didn't focus too much on the people to make it a drama. The movie was quirky, geeky, heart-felt, and with some natural humor in it. What I mean by natural humor is that the humor wasn't necessarily scripted, but naturally carried out by the characters. I am very disappointed by all the bad reviews on here..of course, if all you are expecting is a meaningless comedy with just humor, then of course you wouldn't enjoy the movie because the whole time you'll be thinking, "That wasn't funny. Neither was that. That wasn't either." instead of actually enjoying the film. The movie was never classified just as a comedy, people just automatically assumed that it was because of the actors. But truthfully, the actors did a great job at their roles, and the movie was heartfelt and fun to watch. The music was well chosen, and I think that it was money well spent. Definitely going to be purchasing this movie!.Score: 5/5
Reading linesJack Black is the only one that comes close to acting. Martin and Wilson are so bad it's sad. But the direction was so weak even the great(Black's dad) was floundering around with his character and those were the best moments of the movie.Score: 1/5
Great MovieI get really tired of reading the reviews about how bad the film is. Especially the people who pan it just because they went to it for laughs, the story plot is great and while there isn't much slap stick humor many of the situations they find themselves in are very humorous. And to the people that say the stories fake this actually occurred only the guys names have been changed overall it's a great movie for anyone who has the sense to appreciate it..Score: 4/5

Seeing this may make you say.. I like birds as challenges in life as these guys depicted on screen.This is not the usual movie you think of seeing playing each of these three roles given to them. If you watch this you will have an appreciation of what bird watching can bring to ons life, a challenge to go to get lengths to get that extra sighting with challenges involved, or you can get into watching this movie and see how exciting bird challenges can be for those who are enthusiasts with that one thing in mind.. The big year (win) of sorting the most. The overall movie shows you that a hobby such as bird watching isn't as boring as one thinks it is and in the end you may have learned a thing or two about what true friendships mean. This is much more deserving in getting a better rating than it actually is. Watch this and see how these three actors play out in ending of the movie but how throughout the movie you will come away saying, "have I been a closet bird watcher all the while?" Great for Bird WatchersIf you are a lister, a birder, a twitcher, you will seriously get a kick out of this film. It's based on a book about a big year. And birding and listing is all about big lists and big years. The variety of birds actually in the movie is also very exciting, and many of the rarities were based on real life rarities from the book. If you aren't a birder, and you know someone who is: you will definitely laugh. Even if you aren't into birds and birding - the story is pretty interesting, and fun. It's not got a lot of substance, but it's cheeky and coy and for non-birders, I'd give it a solid three stars. The lengths these guys go to just to see a bird is a lot like the everyday pursuits we all enjoy - they just take it to the next level. All in all, it is a very funny portrayal of a specific hobby group..Score: 4/5
