Hated it.This is maybe the most boring movie i ever seen. thought it might be great because i loved 'house of the devil.' nothing happens at all and the characters are so terribly annoying and awful - it's torture. the girl in it is supposed to be like 22 or something and she acts like she's 12 or even 10. and the guy is really dumb and ugly. and you wait and wait and wait for something, anything to happen and just have to waste your time watching these two be annoying an stupid. as talkie says, this movie was "downtown dudu brown." it's really bad..Score: 1/5

MUST I give it 1 star to review?Wow - this takes the prize for worst film I have ever watched! The acting was absolutely awful. The plot - well there wasn't really a plot. the story didn't go anywhere, and nothing made sense. I kept thinking that it would all probably make more sense towards the end, when the dots got connected, but that never happened. To categorize this film under Horror also makes no sense. Ok - there were a few scares here and there, but a horror movie it wasn't. It seemed more like a comedy that took a wrong turn somewhere. On the other hand, to categorize it as a comedy would have been just as wrong, although it was more comical than scary. An absolute waste of time and money! I'm surprised it's even available for renting - but I guess the last sucker isn't born yet - I mean - we rented it - didn't we?!!.Score: 1/5
Unique, but is dreadfully slowThe movie is very clever, and certainly has it's share of interesting scenes, but it just takes way too long to get to the meat of the story. I felt like I was watching a reality TV show that dealt with a haunted motel, as the scenes between the main protagonists play out almost dreadfully slow. Then again, this is Ti West we are talking about. His movies are more about atmosphere and realism than action, and if you like movies that take 2/3 of the movie to build up the tension, then by all means give it a go. Be warned; this film is definitely not for everyone, and the payoff of the last 20 minutes may not be worth the 1:20 of chit-chat and build-up..Score: 3/5

Very disappointingI have nothing against low budget horror movies. Some of them (Paranormal Activity, Blair Witch Project) are quite good. It's usually because they are quite effective at building a sense of dread and they make the best of low budget effects. Unfortunately, this movie does neither. The effects are quite cheap and the movie goes a LONG time with absolutely nothing happening. Admittedly, the two leads in the movie are quite good, and there are some genuinely funny moments in the movie. But this is supposed to be a horror movie, and the horror falls completely flat..Score: 2/5

Creepy, differentLoved this film, it's cooky, and prefers to build tension using story rather than cheap shock scenes (loud noise, things jumping out). But my favorite aspect was that it doesn't explain the ending, and there's clues in the film to allow several interpretations. Really I wanted to give it 3.5, but couldn't..Score: 4/5

A question posed to "the Shinning" and "The Haunting (1963)".So close to greatness but falls short in the areas where it counts. The concept of the haunting worked quite well as a question: does the place haunt the person or does the person haunt the place? If that core concept had been developed and nurtured in a more coherent way then this could have been a great movie. The secondary theme of the aimless 20 something gen Y'er might also have worked if it had been tied in with the afore mentioned concept and carried into the final act. Abandonment of a theme or a dissonant concept would have still made the movie a three star event but falls short because of the acting or direction the actors were given. The more emotional moments come together but the casual dialogue is flat and transparent in that you can almost hear the direction just by watching the actors. A shame too because there was some opportunity to reveal greater depths of character in those quite moments that just never comes across. I didn't mind the slow burn approach and actually found the pacing pretty even and spot on. There were some creepy moments that were built up with a keen eye towards suspense to the credit of the director; his skill with atmosphere doesn't' live up to "The House of The Devil" in that the hotel environment never really seems threatening. In traditional haunted house movies, the house becomes a character but not so much in "the Innkeeper". Based on that movie and this one, the director knows the horror genre well and instead of taking a comic approach to it's various cliche's like the "Scream" franchise did, he tries to unify them in new ways with mixed results. The components where there for a great movie but each part didn't quite come together for the final product..Score: 2/5
