In the early 20th century, while studying world mythology, Joseph Campbell discovered a pattern hidden in every story ever told and he called it “the heroes journey”. Finding Joe explores how the heroes journey is relevant and essential in today’s world. It provides a narrative for how to live a fully realized life or as Campbell would simply state “follow your bliss”. The film takes us on an inspirational quest of self-discovery. As you slay dragons and uncover treasures, you just may find that the holy grail you seek is closer than you think.
Finding Joe is an exploration of the studies of mythologist Joseph Campbell, and of their continuing influence on our culture. Through interviews with visionaries from a variety of fields—interwoven with enactments of classic tales by a sweet and motley group of kids—the film navigates the stages of what Campbell dubbed "the hero’s journey": the challenges, the fears, the dragons, the battles, and the return home as a changed person.

Reviews are a reflection of where so many people are stuckThis documentary is amzaingly simple, yet true and deep. Joseph Campbell has given us a key to living and life, love and joy, and this movie sums up and drives home the eternal truth and beauty of his wisdom - the wisdom of the ages. When I saw the negative, snobby reviews, I was reminded of how unprepared much of the country still is to opening their hearts and minds - how resistent to life and vulnerability - to self-awareness and transendence. Thank you to all of the kindred souls out there - those who made the film, as well as those who appreciated it. Changed my lifeI came upon this accidentally a few years ago at a low point and place of feeling utterly lost and directionless. I was riveted and captivated by the message and motivated to move through my monstrous fears. I now recommend it to many of my clients that I counsel. Excellent and inspiring documentaryI saw a screening of this doc of joe Campbell's life and influence on myth on our life journey last night. I found it very inspiring, funny, and innovative. Succeeds in inroducing Campbell to a broad audienceThis movie's most profound contribution to the genre is in bringing Joseph Campbell's timeless message to general audiences. It also helps that it was beautifully shot, masterfully scored (seriously, the studio should release the fantastic score album) and the stories are incredibly charming.
