Academy Award winner Jack Nicholson and Shelley Duvall star in director Stanley Kubrick's disturbing adaptation of Stephen King's blockbuster horror novel. When writer Jack Torrance (Nicholson)--who has a history of alcoholism and child abuse--takes a job as winter caretaker for a hotel high in the Rocky Mountains, he, his wife (Duvall) and their psychic young son will be isolated until spring. But once the first blizzard closes the road out, the accumulated power of evil deeds committed at the hotel begins to drive Jack mad. Now there may be no escape for his wife and son in this haunting madness, memory and family violence.

“The Shining”“The Shinning” is an extremely complex picture; to call it a horror film would be a disservice. It at once defined the genre and rendered many future entries irrelevant.
“The Shinning” is one of the best films that I have ever seen, surpassing Kubrick’s own “2001: A Space Odyssey”. The craftsmanship is nearly unprecedented, paralleled only by a few films. Consider, for instance, where Kubrick cuts from Wendy (Shelly Duval) making a circular motion with her hand, to a shot of Danny (Danny Lloyd) tricycling through a hallway, with a piece of hanging plastic, in the background, moving in the same manner as Wendy’s hand. Or Jack, resting in the maze, as a mirror image of Colville’s “Moon and Cow”. (Neither of these are original observations, but they are illustrative of the filmmakers’ deep and nuanced understanding of their medium.)
Kubrick is much like Hitchcock is his ability to manipulate an audience: symbolic, metaphysical, and psychological horror are all mixed with physical horror (i.e. the reality of the ax, death by exposure, etc.). He knows how to make us jump in our chairs and simultaneously consider the reality of what we are seeing.
Even for non-horror fans, I would highly recommend “The Shining”.
