The Shining Description

All work and no play makes Academy Award-winner Jack Nicholson ("As Good As It Gets," "Batman"), the caretaker of an isolated resort, go way off the deep end, terrorizing his young son and wife Shelley Duvall ("Roxanne"). Master filmmaker Stanley Kubrick's ("Full Metal Jacket," "2001: A Space Odyssey") visually haunting chiller, based on the bestseller by master-of-suspense Stephen King ("The Stand," "Carrie," "The Shawshank Redemption"), is an undeniable contemporary classic. Newsweek Magazine calls this "the first epic horror film," full of indelible images, and a signature role for Nicholson whose character was recently selected by AFI for its' 50 Greatest Villains.

The Shining is a television adaptation of a Stephen King novel that follows a recovering alcoholic professor. He ends up taking a job as a winter caretaker for a remote Colorado hotel which he seeks as an opportunity to finish a piece of work. With his wife and son with him, the caretaker settles in, only to see visions of the hotel's long deceased employees and guests. With evil intentions, they manipulate him into his dark side which takes a toll on him and his family.

The Shining Movie Reviews

  • My God, it’s full of twins

  • The movie that changed the way I saw movies forever

    Yorick Delano
Prior to seeing of this movie, "horror" was defined to me by the sheer amount of gore and jump scares the movie could through at its audience and I found them to be very empty experiences. Then, sophomore year, I saw this movie and it changed EVERYTHING! The Shining showed me what a TRUE horror movie could accomplish and was the first movie to ever truly blow me away! It became that kind of movie that I wouldn't shut up about and drove my friends crazy with it! Not only did my opinion of horror movies change but movies in general! No longer would I settle for half hearted Adam Sandler or Michael Bay movies, I had grown up and turned my focus to true classics like Taxi Driver, Alien and Blade Runner! To this day it remains my favorite movie (besides Aladdin and Akira of coarse, I can never truly choose one favorite)
  • Buy!!!

My favorite horror movie better than the silence of the lambs best of kubrick
  • Here's to who-knows-how-many miserable days on set.

The first time I saw this film it was in the middle of Jack Torrance's maniacal rage. The second time, it was just boring. All I got was Jack as an inactive volcano waiting for the right time to blow, and little Danny as an observant child aware of ambiguous danger...who was later traumatized into silence. As for the Grady twins, their first appearance was so random that they had no business showing at all. Not to mention the look on Shelley Duvall's face when the haunts begin. Who or what is creepier? The ghosts or the petrified face of Wendy Torrance (Duvall)? Well, if there is one good to come out of this movie, or two rather, it is the old "Heeeere's Johnny!" coming out of Jack Nicholson, and--for those who saw the original trailer--the elevator opening to release a wave of blood. As lousy as the film is, I would still watch it. Certainly for the sake of comparing it to the superior source material. Still I just wish that Stan Kubrick would have only stopped lying to himself about how unsure of what to do he was.
  • Not one of my favorites....

I am not a fan of this version of "The Shining". Please, iTunes, make "The Shining: TV mini-series" available for purchase. That version stayed truer to the book.
  • ugh.....

If it weren't for the repetitive and insanely annoying "REDRUM!!" the movie would be near perfect.
  • Here's Johnny!

    Just that.😃
  • "Come play with us Danny"

Love this movie... one of the greatest of all-time....
  • Top 100 movies ever!!

One of my top 100 favorite movies of all time!! I would never tell anyone to buy it because I'd tell anyone no matter who it is.. you need to buy it!! Instant classic and an timeless movie that should never be remade!!

  • First to Write a Review?

What is there to say? This is a classic. One of the best horror/thrillers ever made. If you have not seen this movie already, then don't bother. You have bigger problems with your life.
