Written and directed by Academy Award-winner Stephen Gahan ("Traffic"), Syriana tracks several disparate characters across the globe as they find their lives impacted by the ruthless competition for incalculable power and wealth that drives the energy industry. Starring Academy Award and Golden Globe-winner and Emmy-nominees George Clooney ("Good Night, And Good Luck," "Ocean's Eleven," "Ocean's Twelve"), and Matt Damon ("Ocean's Eleven," "Ocean's Twelve," "The Bourne Supremacy"), Academy Award and Golden Globe-winner Chris Cooper ("American Beauty," "Adaptation") and Academy Award-winner and Golden Globe-nominee William Hurt ("Syriana," "The Village"). George Clooney won his first Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his role.

The Middle Eastern oil industry is the backdrop of this tense drama, which weaves together numerous story lines. Bennett Holiday is an American lawyer in charge of facilitating a dubious merger of oil companies, while Bryan Woodman, a Switzerland-based energy analyst, experiences both personal tragedy and opportunity during a visit with Arabian royalty. Meanwhile, veteran CIA agent Bob Barnes uncovers an assassination plot with unsettling origins.

A real spy movie for our times...A thoughtful, gritty, realistic look at how lawyers, monarchs, suits and spies create the world of the petrodollar and Middle Eastern oil wars. Clooney permanently injured his back during the shoot, an example of the effort and dedication that went into this terse and clever thriller..Zidane2015Score: 5/5

A good story poorly toldThis has the makings of a good movie but it is very sketchy and slow. They had everything they needed to make a great film from this content, but in the end it makes me wonder if the editor had any idea what the story is about, while the director simply told him what to do. The result was that the director did a bad job of telling the story. In the end you have a good idea of what happened, but it is such a convoluted mess that you might not be quite sure. This film barely broke even on global release and it tanked in the States. No wonder. It could have been great but instead what we get is a rambling, boring, sleepy tale about the politics of oil..Furutan1Score: 3/5
