FOOTNOTE is the tale of a great rivalry between a father and son. Eliezer and Uriel Shkolnik are both eccentric professors, who have dedicated their lives to their work in Talmudic Studies. The father, Eliezer, is a stubborn purist who fears the establishment and has never been recognized for his work. Meanwhile his son, Uriel, is an up-and-coming star in the field, who appears to feed on accolades, endlessly seeking recognition. Then one day, the tables turn. When Eliezer learns that he is to be awarded the Israel Prize, the most valuable honor for scholarship in the country, his vanity and desperate need for validation are exposed. His son, Uriel, is thrilled to see his father’s achievements finally recognized but, in a darkly funny twist, is forced to choose between the advancement of his own career and his father’s. Will he sabotage his father’s glory?
Like many, throughout 2020 Chinese-born, US-based filmmaker Zhengfan Yang (Where Are You Going, IFFR 2016) looked closer at his immediate surroundings. From his apartment complex in Chicago, the filmmaker records ostensibly quotidian scenes: people walking, window cleaners, street sweepers; life viewed from inside a bubble.

Missing an endingIf you like movies that delve deeply into messed up family relationships then suddenly end with zero resolution, you'll like this. I had to rewind at the end to make sure that was actually the ending. It's like the plot developed and developed and at the conclusion your tv goes out. Great. Now what? Rotten tomatoes, you have failed me..Score: 1/5
They forgot to film the endingIt was a wonderful, engaging movie that ended abruptly. It was like they had a script for a two hour movie, but ran out of money and were unable to film the final 15 minutes. Just imagine the film "The Fugitive" with the bad guys getting away at the end and Richard Kimble still on the run. There is no resolution in "Footnote.".Score: 3/5
Leaves you thinkingA rare and intelligent drama that invites the viewer to speculate about the characters' lives rather than spell everything out for us the way most American films are made. The film maker never explicitly states what went on in the past. We are left guessing what emotional issues the father has: Aspergers disease perhaps?, or why the mother is so noncommittal, or why the rival professor is so hateful or the son so bitter. The ending provocatively requires the viewer to reach his or her own conclusions. Looking forward to many more fine films from Joseph Cedar..Score: 5/5

Thinking Person's MasterpieceSaw this at Telluride and was blown away. Constant twisting of the knife in this immediately identifiable but weirdly universal family kept me glued to the screen. Unrelenting and unbelievably good, Footnote earned its Academy Award nomination and would have won in any year it wasn't up against A Separation (also amazing). If you dig Woody Allen at his best or an Almodovar drama, this masterpiece is for you..Score: 5/5
