Held captive in a specialized medical facility, a young woman with unique abilities seeks a chance to escape her obsessed captor. Set in the strange and oppressive emotional landscape of the year 1983, Beyond the Black Rainbow is a Reagan-era fever dream inspired by hazy childhood memories of midnight movies and Saturday morning cartoons. From the producer of Machotaildrop, Rainbow is the outlandish feature film debut of writer and director Panos Cosmatos. Featuring a hypnotic analog synthesizer score by Jeremy Schmidt of “Sinoia Caves” and “Black Mountain,” Rainbow is a film experience for the senses.
Deep within the mysterious Arboria Institute, a disturbed and beautiful girl is held captive by a doctor in search of inner peace. Her mind controlled by a sinister technology. Silently, she waits for her next session with deranged therapist Dr. Barry Nyle. If she hopes to escape, she must journey through the darkest reaches of The Institute, but Nyle wonʼt easily part with his most gifted and dangerous creation.

The Best Director hands downI have seen a lot of movies but none have ever captured a beautiful idea of a world so completely perfect as this one. It doesn't force a story on you, it hints at you a plot and leaves traces of story elements with beautiful surreal imagery. It is very dreamlike and strangely zen to watch this horror genre type film. I loved every second of it!.Score: 5/5
Magnificent (if a little slow)They don't make enough movies like this one. It doesn't go far, and it takes its time getting there, but the retrotropic ride is enjoyable. The poster, while cool, makes the movie look like Halloween or something - which it definitely isn't. What is it about then? Well, that's not as hard to figure out as some of the critics would have you believe, though I still don't know for sure. In any case, its not real important. Let's just say that Dr Mercurio Arboria probably chose his name for the same reason Ford Prefect did….but you don't have to understand that statement to enjoy this movie. Michael Rogers gives a fantastic performance as Barry, Elena's "doctor". Somehow, even in pretty heavy makeup he's able to go from evil to pitiable to hilarious. The Man Who Fell To Earth meets American Psycho, well sort of. Maybe I'm just saying that because he kind of resembles Christian Bale. It doesn't matter, just watch the movie! I'm greatly looking forward to more from Panos Cosmatos..Score: 4/5
The 80s Psychedelic Horror film you deserveThis is a psyched out thrill ride from start to finish. From the starting home footage of Arboria Institute to the close of the film you are in for a mind bending synth laden freak out of my kind of mind-altering cinema. This movie changed my taste in movies and I went down a psychedelic horror rabbit hole that I’m still in to this day. I cannot say enough good things about Panos. He is one of my favorite directors- they need to give this man some money so he can make another movie. Check out Mandy as well. Guy is absolutely phenomenal! Thanks Cosomatos!.Score: 5/5
A Visual Moog Montage !What a spectacular film front to back. Music, lighting and cinematography on point with a remastered feeling throughout. Better to buy this one than rent, if you are in love with re-up 80's era styles with 21st century attitudes. Watch loud and in the dark..Score: 5/5

A Trippy, Affecting ExperienceAn oblique and vague narrative transports the viewer through hypnotic sound design, cinematography, and acting. Michael Rogers creates one of the most interesting villains of recent horror/sci-fi history and caps great performances all the way around. Above all else, “Beyond the Black Rainbow” should be taken in as a sensory experience. I’ve seen a lot of people ascribe deep meanings to the plot, but if you can sustain 3-4 viewings it should be fairly obvious ‘what is going on’. Not nearly the incomprehensible story that some critics seem convinced it is, "Beyond the Black Rainbow" is an engrossing flashback a 1983 that never was..Score: 5/5
Art and weirdnessPace is slow, but that's one of the things that makes this film even better, imo. Film making / editing etc itself is impressive. As I see it, much better than many/most mainstream movies. Story itself is pretty uncomfortable but that is what makes it a good match to slow pace and impressive skills in same time. Got to add that people who trash this movie… well, I just feel sorry for them not being able to appreciate cool stuff besides what their little square world contains (sorry.) To watch this movie, I consider it to be an experience. It creates interesting ideas, thoughts, and questions..Score: 4/5
Haunting! The cinematography, synth music, and acting are superb! As a lover of the 80s, the feel of that time was captured completely. Michael Rogers' performance is a haunting one, and unforgettable. Panos Cosmatos' vision is a masterpiece that I will enjoy to watch over and over again..Score: 5/5
Atmosphere and dream logicIt has an atmosphere halfway between 2001:A space Odessey and Susperia. What I fidn if fresh about this film is it's subtety, atmosphere takes precedent over plot details. The polt seems discoverable, there appears to be deeper bacl stories behind all the chracters and their relations, but it give sparse details that are often not disclosed in a way that directs the audience away from it's deep atmospheric moods.
