Oh no...I loved this movie, and have seen it many times. I told my fiancee how wonderful it is... and went to iTunes and bought it to share. Well, this version (director's definitive) is not good. Nearly incomprehensible, in fact, unless you have either seen the theatrical version or have an ESP connection with the original screenwriter. I had to keep a running dialogue going with my fiancee for it to make any sense. The panoramas are still breathtaking and the period creation wonderful, but the story has been hamstrung like a vicious Huron. Please bring back the original!.Score: 1/5
An Absolutely Thrilling and Beautiful Western Drama and Adventure Movie"The Last of the Mohicans" is a thrilling, fierce adventure movie tempered with attention to historical detail, melodramatic emotion, and a sympathetic tense depiction of the French and Indian War era. Hawkeye a white man who was adopted by the Mohicans, finds himself on a perilous journey to escort a couple of British sisters to their father's fort. This journey brings him, and his companions, into conflict with Magua, a sadistic Huron warrior seeking revenge on the girls' father. This movie is an epic adventure and romance set against the panorama of a frontier wilderness ravaged by the French and Indian War. It focuses on the plight of three totally different civilizations (The English, The French and the Native Americans) with their battles for the continent of North America. Director Michael Mann brilliantly captures the essence of the 1750's era with the hand-to hand battles, the scalpings and the harsh life in the wilderness. The action scenes are quite realistic and border on being enormously powerful. The scenery of the filming locations in old-growth forestlands and mountains in North Carolina looks beautiful and breathtaking. The characters are colorful and have a lot of personality. The casting is superb. The actors and the actresses have done an excellent job for their roles. Daniel Day Lewis gives an excellent performance as Hawkeye, the adopted white son of Chingagchook. Madeliene Stowe was excellent in her role as Cora, Colonel Munro's oldest daughter. Both Daniel Day-Lewis and Madeleine Stowe generate excellent chemistry with rich material for their characters. The performances of the Native American actors, Wes Studi, Russell Means, Eric Sweig and Dennis Banks were very remarkable. This film indeed gives a brilliant look at a certain point in history as one point in a huge timeline. The music score is epic and hauntingly beautiful. A timeless tale of the 18th century frontier and the virtue and tragedy that results when the uniquely different cultures of the French, English, Native Americans, and colonists collide. A perfect mix of adventure, action, drama, and romance. Highly recommended..Score: 5/5
Best Movie of All TimeThis was one of my favorites back in high school, and twenty years later it's the one movie I can watch over and over without ever getting tired of it. The achingly epic music, breathtaking scenery, beautiful and accurate costumes, elegant fight scenes, riveting and believable performances, and perhaps especially a willingness to eschew anachronism and let the eighteenth century be the eighteenth century all combine to make this one special piece of filmmaking. What would be done now with CGI and MTV-style editing is done here with real performers and real sets, all filmed with grace and beauty. Of all the "cuts" that have been released, this one is my favorite. Some of the dumber one-liners from the theatrical version are left out, while some worthwhile ones cut out from the previous director's cut are restored. Chingachgook's monologue at the end is restored to the briefer theatrical cut. The Clannad music is back, but all in Gaelic. I wouldn't go back to either of the previous versions. Don't understand negative reviews for this editionI was unsure whether to watch this on iTunes, because many of the reviews complained about the 'Directors Cut' which apparently degraded the movie. However this edition is the 'Directors Definitive Edition' and I personally thought it was as good as the original I saw (many times), and I couldn't find any criticism about the Definitive Edition online. All the key points that made the movie very powerful for me are there - the scalping, the Clannad music, the speech by Chingachcook at the end. This version looks great on my large HD tv, better than the old DVD which I have. I rented it because I wanted my children to see it for the first time, and I wanted to make sure the film didn't look aged. It didn't disappoint. What a movie..Score: 5/5

An Emasculated Version of a MasterpieceUnfortunately, I must rate this movie as low as possible. To make a long story short, this version -- as advertised -- is the "Director's Definitive Cut". It differs in several key scenes with the the Theatrical version. The differences are, in my opinion and in the opinion of a multitude of other fans (see many of the forums searching for the Theatrical edition on the internet), enough to make this version absolutely terrible when compared to the original. iTunes previously sold the Theatrical edition of the movie but recently removed it and added this version. I wrote a much longer Review of this movie, which was both politely and intelligently composed, just a few days ago expressing my discontent at this choice and the desire for the other version of the movie. I hope that this review actually makes it to posting. iTunes, please post the theatrical version of this movie -- I assure you, it will sell better than this version! Let me be clear, the theatrical version of this movie is one of my absolute favorite movies of all time. This version, however, emasculates it..Score: 1/5

Great Movie … Poor Image QualityFor the SD version of the film: Image quality is very poor. My old VHS tape of the film was crisper. Much of the film takes place at dusk, at night, or in dark caves … and these scenes are just black, with black shadows, and more blackness in the foreground and background.
