In this lively (and paranoid) adventure set in the mid-1980s, the US stands alone, abandoned by its allies. The USSR and Cuba start selective bombing, then invade the US and quickly capture the central part of the country. The film takes place entirely in a small town taken by surprise by paratroopers. A band of teenagers (led by Patrick Swayze and C. Thomas Howell) escape to the mountains and become a group of tough guerrillas that launch a series of surprise attacks on the murderous and nasty Red invaders. But the teenagers start getting a bit troubled themselves. In their brutality, are they becoming just like their enemies? The band of teens fights on, becoming a smaller and smaller group. They help pave the way for the eventual victory of the main American Army, busy elsewhere in the Republic.
It is the dawn of World War III. In mid-western America, a group of teenagers band together to defend their town—and their country—from invading Soviet forces.

The remake couldn't do itOne of the most amazing movies I've seen in a very long time. I had seen the remake first because I didn't know the original version. The remake couldn't do any of this; the wonderful acting, the character portrayal from the actors was heartwrenching, tearjerking, outstanding and amazing. It made me cry, laugh. A movie that everyone should watch. It's not just your regular action film. Its heartwrenching, and it's bound to have your heart pounding by the end, middle, and beginning of the movie. The remake is a disappointment to the original. The remake just couldn't do what the original did..Score: 5/5
ReddawnThis version was good for its time as far as the remake goes its like anything else re made why deny the next generation a decent mvie storyline with updated actors they will recognize and updated lines with current meaning and speech i loved this movie but if i were a teen or 20 something now and this was the only option id make it thru 10 mins and switch the channel due to the corniness and just plain bad visual presentation it doesn't stack up to todays technologies so why deny this generation a great storyline because we old people don't like change.Score: 5/5
Paranoid??Yeah because countries never invade/occupy other countries (Russia/Ukraine right now) and as woke as our military is now it won’t take long for our enemies to think we’re distracted. Memo to a guy named Mohammed, they think you are the enemy! This movie is a piece of trash and typical of the idiotic chest thumping ,flag waving so common to Reagan era America. It has not improved with time. The new remake is even worst. the Soviet Union was a menace but provided an equal counter balance to American power in the world but North Korea? Movies like this are Caused by fear and paranoia. Patrick Swayze was the Tatum Chaning of his day. FDR Liberal says "It's a guilty pleasure."I'm an FDR Liberal (note that he was the first president to call himself a Liberal and he successfully prosecuted World War Two. Also Lincoln was clearly a progressive who would have been a Democrat today). But I watched this film when I was in the Army back in the mid-1980s. The movie is often cheesy and a little dumb (for instance when Harry Dean Stanton tells his sons to slip out of town and then crazily shouts "Avenge me!", which would have drawn attention, right?) But I liked this movie when I was in the army just because. As war films go its got heart and sometimes it's awesome. Powers Booth is pitch perfect and at its best the film feels almost Capraesque compared to todays hyperactive cinema. A few things to note here, by the way, for both sides of the political aisle. First, I'm pretty sure that the "Soviet" tanks being used were OPFOR mock ups loaned out by the Army. OPFOR (meaning opposition forces) were American soldiers based at Fort Irwin (and elsewhere) used to train American soldiers against Soviet tactics and strategy before the Berlin War fell (and likely for a while after). Also, this film is notably Feminist in that women (girls really) fight along side men. Finally, for the film buffs out there, (spoiler alert) the scene introduction Spetsnaz counter insurgency forces (both their march into town and the briefing) is almost to a perfect note referencing "The Battle for Algiers" by Gillo Pontecorvo, a 1966 anti-colonial film about the French's fight to defeat Algerian nationalist/communist insurgents. The film is so realistic (and, in fact, the actors in the film were the ones who actually fought the French) that both the Pentagon and terrorists are said to use it in their training.
