In this lively (and paranoid) adventure set in the mid-1980s, the US stands alone, abandoned by its allies. The USSR and Cuba start selective bombing, then invade the US and quickly capture the central part of the country. The film takes place entirely in a small town taken by surprise by paratroopers. A band of teenagers (led by Patrick Swayze and C. Thomas Howell) escape to the mountains and become a group of tough guerrillas that launch a series of surprise attacks on the murderous and nasty Red invaders. But the teenagers start getting a bit troubled themselves. In their brutality, are they becoming just like their enemies? The band of teens fights on, becoming a smaller and smaller group. They help pave the way for the eventual victory of the main American Army, busy elsewhere in the Republic.
On October 2, 1968, a student uprising descends into violence after the Mexican government begins to use lethal force against the protesters.

One of my Top 10 Favorites(Reviewing the original, 1984 version.)
This is easily one of my favorite movies, and has been since I saw it in the a movie theater when it first came out.
NOTE: As others have posted, people shouldn't have given a negative review of the film due to iTune's mistakes re: which trailers, etc., from the re-make were incorrectly associated with the original version; these mistakes have been fixed - the trailer attached to this film is in fact the correct one. Likewise, giving a negative review because you rented/bought the wrong film based on your own mistake is not fair either! You should be reviewing the 1984 version of the film itself!
I've always been amazed at the number of actors who were in this movie and then later went on to varying degrees of greatness!
As the movie deals with political climates and topics, one must keep in mind both the era in which it is set, and the era in which it was made - in this case, both are in the early to mid- 1980's, when the Cold War between U.S. and the USSR had fired up again. I had just turned 15 when Red Dawn came out, and I remember I'd been thinking for years before that a nuclear war of some scale was inevitable - so at the time, events which take place in Red Dawn didn't strike me as particularly outside the realm of possibility. One of the must watch movies from the 80sAt the height of the cold war, the threat of totalitarian collectivism, that naturally resulted from Karl Marx' delusions and superstitions of 130 years earlier, was something that Americans had little choice but to take very seriously. At the time, the scenario presented in Red Dawn was quite plausible and perhaps even considered likely. Unlike the rather weak attempt at plausibiliyt conjured up by the remake released in 2012. In a way, this is kind of a 1980s version of the Hunger Games or there are at least similarities between the two - young people courageously fighting back against the supposedly insurmountable odds of totalitarian collectivism, in each case. It was kind of interesting to see some of the brands, such as the North Face, in the movie as well. While I like North Face products, I had no ideas that they were even around in 1984. And yet the characters are out fighting back against totalitarianism with their North Face backpacks on. Not to plug North Face, just pointing out something that I had not remembered from seeing the film in 1984. Unlike today, there was no political correctness run amok and the line between the bad guys and the good guys was clear cut. Would Americans have the capability to fight back against the primitive superstitions of totalitarian collectivism today? Maybe half or so - the other half would immediately submit and go quietly into the darkness. Let the 'Wolverines' be an inspiration to each of us..Score: 5/5

ExcellentI have to remove one star for the original premise for the invasion although the high quality acting really makes up for it.
