True crime novelist Ellison Oswald (Ethan Hawke) is so desperate to repeat the success of his first book that he moves his family into a home that served as the setting of a brutal murder. But instead of inspiration, Ellison finds a box of mysterious home movies in the attic that seem to point to unspeakable terrors – ones that could threaten his entire family.

True-crime writer Ellison Oswald is in a slump; he hasn't had a best seller in more than 10 years and is becoming increasingly desperate for a hit. So, when he discovers the existence of a snuff film showing the deaths of a family, he vows to solve the mystery. He moves his own family into the victims' home and gets to work. However, when old film footage and other clues hint at the presence of a supernatural force, Ellison learns that living in the house may be fatal.

Honestly Not ImpressedI am a horror buff and was looking forward to this film. However, I was thoroughly disappointed. The movie was very slow and there wasn't a lot of action. I felt that it was a bit tedious. The film also left many questions unanswered and lacked a proper resolution. I wish that they could have delved into Bagul's backstory a bit more instead of just alluding to his ominous presence. I hated the ending and felt that it was a bit too abrupt. Brilliant, Scary, Slightly disappointing...The first 80% of this movie is phenomenal. The opening shot sends chills up your spine, and there were parts that had me so on edge that I literally reflexively stood up and moved toward the door. I don’t scare easy but something about this one just struck a nerve with me. Here’s where I got a little disappointed - the final 20% of the movie is just things unraveling exactly - and I mean EXACTLY - as you’d expect, to the point at which by the ending you’re going “seriously? That’s it?” This film has some great ideas, but it just plays all its cards early on and has nothing left but the painfully obvious by the end. Instead of resolving, the movie just runs out the clock. You could say that was a set-up for a sequel, but I rarely buy that. There are plenty of great film sagas where each film works both independently and as part of the whole, and the premise of this film is not broad enough to compel me to watch the whole thing happen again in a second movie revolving around secondary characters I care less about. That said, I’m still giving this 4/5, so I DO think it’s worth watching if you like some good scares and suspense. Just expect a bit of a bummer ending..AnonymouspianistScore: 4/5

Formulaic and Not Worth ItDon't bother unless you like completely formulaic horror movies. Remember, when you hear creepy sounds and you walk into a room, be sure *not* to turn on the lights. Always, always use a super-dim flashlight when exploring eery backyards at night. No spoilers here - nothing to spoil, not even a plot twist. Lesson learned? Amazing horror film, restored my faith in modern horrorsFor people who have lost faith in the horror genre, especially with the multitude of failed found footage films, this movie will change that. This movie provides an original perspective on the found footage genre. It's about the person who watches the footage. It has a very original plot, original methods for scaring the audience, and a very original antagonist, which is a demon. Plus, it stars Ethan Hawk who is an excellent actor and gives us an amazing performance in this film. The opening scene is disturbing enough, with found footage showing a family being hung from a tree in their backyard. Ethan hawk views five disturbing films, the one I just mentioned, a family having their throats slit, a family be drowned in a pool, and a family being incinerated alive in their car. The fifth film is the most disturbing one of all, and I won't ruin it. After watching the films, strange unexplainable things start to occur in Ethan Hawk's home. Watch this filmed!
