Day-Lewis Is Utter RevelationMaybe a bit of a subversive look at the end of Abraham Lincoln’s presidency that some might call boring, but a slowly paced story is overshadowed by a brilliant Daniel Day-Lewis in an instant Oscar-winning performance and some Steven Spielberg magic. 8.5/10.Score: 5/5

A little dullAmazing performances but clunky storytelling left me regularly glancing at my watch. The focus on micro political wrangling felt like a lite version of the West Wing, with less engaging characters.. The biggest irony of 2012 was that Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter was not only more engaging and entertaining, but amazingly also a better historical tale of the time. Brilliant, simply exquisite!I love these reviews that claim to be bored or bothered by all the talking and not much action in this movie. Or “ I’m a historian and they got so much wrong “. The acting by DDL and Sally Field is without question as good as it gets. The supporting roles especially Mr. Strathairn are sublime. Directing and cinematography are expertly done. Compromise on displayThis is a great depiction of one of our country's most significant crossroads. It dramatizes these events in a better way than I understood from history class. If I was to describe or create a character to portray what I knew of Lincoln, Daniel Day-Lewis was that and more. The movie was lengthy, without seeming long. In fact, I found myself thinking, 'it's over already?' The dialog was very entertaining, given the sensitivity of the subject. It makes you crave that kind of debate in today's Congress. You felt the sense of victory when Lincoln exclaims that 'slavery is done'. I found myself feeling such sorrow for what 'reward' Lincoln received after accomplishing so much. It was a great demonstration of the compromise needed to change the direction of a country..Score: 5/5
Good, Not GreatSpielberg and Kushner put all their best and worst instincts into this. Unfortunately they put their worst right in the opening scene, which is so terribly phony I almost gave up right there. But it gets better, in fits and starts. It really should have been titled "The Thirteenth Amendment," since that's its real focus. It certainly isn't a Lincoln biopic. Kushner doesn't hold your hand as he delves deep into the labyrinthine politics in Washington toward the end of the Civil War. As a history fan I liked these parts, but others might be thoroughly confused about who's saying what to whom and why. The parts focusing on the Linoln family get pretty mawkish, as only Spielberg and Kushner can. But Day-Lewis is of course brilliant as Lincoln, and I was delighted that Kushner focused so much (maybe a bit too much) on Abe's penchant for jokes and shaggy dog stories. Stretched over two and a half hours and steeped in a Ken Burns level of PC orthodoxy, it ultimately comes off like a very expensive, very classy PBS docudrama. But the good parts are good, and Day-Lewis makes it worth watching..Score: 3/5

Boring but great actingDaniel day-lewis, as usual, puts on an amazing performance.
