When a Man Loves a Mermaid"Splash" is a significant film for a few reasons: for one thing, it singlehandedly popularized Madison as a girl's name. It was also the first film released by Touchstone (Disney's banner for adult-oriented fare). In this film, Tom Hanks falls in love with a mermaid who lives off the coast of Cape Cod. The mermaid adopts the name "Madison" on land (after seeing a Madison Avenue street sign) because her real name is a series of high-pitched squeals capable of shattering glass (the scene in which Madison gives her real name is hilarious).
