Joss Whedon's sexy and contemporary spin on Shakespeare's classic comedy about the story of sparring lovers Beatrice and Benedick - offering a sensual, dark and occasionally absurd view of the intricate game that is love.
In this Shakespearean farce, Hero and her groom-to-be, Claudio, team up with Claudio's commanding officer, Don Pedro, the week before their wedding to hatch a matchmaking scheme. Their targets are sharp-witted duo Benedick and Beatrice -- a tough task indeed, considering their corresponding distaste for love and each other. Meanwhile, meddling Don John plots to ruin the wedding.

Good--but not greatThe movie was not as ground-breaking as the trailer suggested; however, it was very entertaining and interesting to watch. The actors did a lovely job of making the Shakespearean language comprehensible in a modern context but I felt like the modern setting was almost pointless. The modern context, I suppose, was used to attract attention from people who are not normally Shakespeare fans but I don't think that they did anything spectacular or particularly creative with that modern setting. It was an entertaining watch--not necessarily one that I could ponder much about after or wish to see again..Score: 4/5
Inconsistent but okayI love the actors in this production but some of them gave very inconsistent performances. Alexis Denisof is charming...he had the expressions but he did not own the language. Reed Diamond was not charismatic enough to be Don Pedro. Sean Maher brought some subtlety to Don John but he delivered his lines like he was trying to memorize them in front of a mirror. On the flip side, I was incredibly impressed by Fran Kranz. Clark Gregg also did a fantastic job as did Jillian Morgese. Amy Acker started off not doing very well but by the time it was over, she settled in and did well. It made me think they filmed the movie in sequence. All around, I think it's probably worth the 7.99 but not much more. Definitely a labor of love and if you're desperate for another rendition, this isn't going to totally offend you. However, if you can get past Keanu Reeves and his 'bite', then the Kenneth Branagh version is vastly superior and you might as well just watch that instead..Score: 3/5
Fantastic AdaptationWhile I very much love the original film directed by Kenneth Branagh, I can't help but love this Whedon, modern day adaptation. I was impressed with the way Whedon helped the viewer understand the language through the performance of the actors. Even after seeing the 1993 film several times, Whedon's direction accompanied by the actors' performances moved me to tears more than once. Besides the modern setting, there were a few other changes to the new film, such as the character Conrade being portrayed by a female and having a much cleaner, less obnoxious Dogberry. While it would have been quite humorous to see Castle Star, Nathan Fillion, duplicate Michael Keaton's performance in the 1993 film, I thoroughly enjoyed Dogberry and company's portrayal. Casting was spot on. I was thrilled to see so many of Whedon's former colleagues in this film. Even more impressive was the fact that this film was filmed in only 12 days (and in Whedon's home). Overall, this new adaption exceeded my expectations. I absolutely loved it. Kudos to Whedon and cast!.Score: 5/5
So goodThis was really fun to watch. I am looking forward to watching it again! Many levels of goodness here, first the writing duh this is The Bard as comedian poking fun at human foibles and egos. Then the players, many familiar faces among them, plying their craft at it's purest, filing in the director's home, in modern garb but staying true to the Elizabethan English....clearly this was a lot of fun to make, and it is a lot of fun to watch..Score: 5/5

A Good TimeI love movies where it is obvious that the cast had a blast making it. And this is one of those movies. The adaptation is fun, the direction and camera work are interesting. I LOVE Beatrice and much of the supporting cast. Unfortunately, the actor playing Benedict doesn't really match up against everyone else. But Nathan Fillion is Dogberry, and that is one of the awesomest things ever..Score: 4/5

Need to study black and white cinematographyI may be one of the few who had issues about how this movie was filmed. Shooting black and white is not the same as color! The director/cinematographer needs to think about how differently the film will look in the different medium. Think about lighting, contrast, think about the clothing and the set design, think about framing. I was so annoyed by the filming, I didn't pay much attention to the story. There is a price to be paid for shooting fast and cheaply!.Score: 2/5
