Jesse (Ethan Hawke) and Celine (Julie Delpy) first met in their twenties in Before Sunrise; reunited in their thirties in Before Sunset; and, now, in director Richard Linklater's amazing Before Midnight, they face the past, present and future; family, romance, and love. Now married and in Greece, the couple looks for a night of passion, but instead their idyllic night turns into a test of their relationship, and a discussion of what their future holds for them.
It has been nine years since we last met Jesse and Celine, the French-American couple who once met on a train in Vienna. They now live in Paris with twin daughters but have spent a summer in Greece at the invitation of an author colleague of Jesse's. When the vacation is over and Jesse must send his teenage son off to the States, he begins to question his life decisions, and his relationship with Celine is at risk.

Forced dialogueThe dialogue was forced and no one seemed to enjoy being in the movie. The dialogue was more for a couple that had been together a year not ten years. I give it one big yawn..Score: 1/5
Before MidnightAnyone giving this movie a terrible review and claiming that it drags or regretting renting a movie about two people arguing, clearly has never seen the first two movies. The whole point of these films is to show a true life romance and cut out all the bull. Before Midnight was a perfect finish to a trilogy that dared to think outside of the box. We met this couple as they met each other, and we have followed their story all the way to this point. If you're up for a realistic and dialogue based performance without the fancy tricks or magic fixes to problems, give it a go. If you haven't seen the first two films I doubt you'll feel the full effect of the film and recommend seeking them out. You'll know right away if this is for you..Score: 4/5

I hated this movieI am in love, and have been married for 13 years. As a person in love, this movie was the most painful thing my wife and I have watched ever. Sometimes people are weak. Perhaps this is two people at their weakest moment in life. But still, I just don’t see the entertainment in it - I just watched people argue for an hour and a half. I held on to the bitter end thinking that somehow a movie so insanely highly rated would make up for it in the end. I was wrong..Score: 1/5

Married LoveI can only hazard a guess that those who like this movie must be currently married or divorced. The whole movie is about married love ... the kind where you can vomit piles of puke on your partner and somehow, once vomited up, have sex, all as part of a day in the life of married partners. Like a tragic Tennessee Williams play, Before Midnight, plays up the inequities and boundary restrictions of married life, making it about as appealing as eating a cup of sour jalapenos. Singles should avoid this movie at all costs. It's such a downer that if you had even the smallest inkling to get married before, you won't after watching it. I guess that Julie Delphy and Ethan Hawke did a good job portraying a miserably married, but still in love coulee. The dialogue is largely unscripted and ventures into boring bashing early on. By the time it ends, you’ll be glad.... and asking yourself why you hung with it. Being optimistic, I kept hoping for a change -- something that would elevate the movie into something spontaneous and clever. Didn't happen. . There's a reason scriptwriters get paid ridiculous amounts of money. This is their talent and what they're good at. Why Linklater would encourage non-gifted actors to write their own scenes has to be an experiment gone wrong. The stars showed absolutely no proclivity at writing dialogue. Linklater is that writer/producer who likes to be "creative" and walk his own path. My only request for him is why don't you encourage y9our coast to do what they're good act -- acting, not improv. Script it yourself and write crispy inventive dialogue and you could have a good movie on your hands. But the premise is boring, so good scripting is the least that's needed to raise this rag rug off the floor..Score: 2/5

DisappointingAs a marriage and family therapist, perhaps I'm just tired of watching people have endless, fruitless conversations that perpetuate their misery and keep them estranged, but I found nothing uplifting or illuminating in this film, and the problems are so heavily weighted toward Celine, who clearly has issues with depression, that it almost seems misogynistic. Her perpetual catastrophizing and inability to enjoy the moment in front of her make their relationship painful to watch. And the ending offers just a temporary, and largely unconvincing bandaid over a gaping wound..Score: 2/5
