What is a "Cautionary Diamond”?Diamond Dealer: This is a cautionary stone. Counselor: A cautionary diamond. Diamond Dealer: Of course. Why not? Although I suppose every diamond is cautionary. It is not a small thing to wish ton however unattainable... To partake of the stones endless destiny is that not the meaning of adornment? To enhance the beauty of the beloved is to acknowledge both her frailty and the nobility of that frailty. At our noblest we announce to the darkness that we will not be diminished by the brevity of our lives. +++ A "Cautionary Tale" points out a "danger" then gives an illustration of the danger through the fate of a character who does not heed the danger. Early in the tale the counselor visits a wise man who happens to be a diamond dealer who explains that the diamond business is very cynical and looks at a diamond only in terms of its flaws. All diamonds have flaws. As the dealer explains a diamond can tell a story and we are the beings capable of bearing witness to that story. The first diamond the counselor is shown has a well known flaw called a feather. With the wise dealers guidance the counselor is finally able to see the flaw. Later the wise dealer pulls from a drawer a stone we can imagine he keeps with him as a reminder. What is the flaw that even a very old hard diamond can have that would serve as an illustration to the danger that even the strongest wisest and most durable of us can be susceptible to? The wise dealer like the wise author can point to a perfect illustration of the danger but he cant make others see it. The rest of the film tells the tale of what the counselor (and our society) doesn’t see. I recommend the unrated extended cut of this excellent lilm for the full scene with the diamond dealer. Waste of time and moneyI should have trusted the ratings: 34%. Despite a great casting, this moving is not entertaining at all. This movie seems to be willing to look realistic, it is not the case. It tries to be deep and this is plain dumb. Cameroon Diaz plays a villain that is not even great. I watched it up until the end, hoping that something interesting might come out of it, but there is nothing to redeem this movie. Even the plot makes no sense. It’s not defined;It’s not looking for anything.This is a terrible movie! There is no interesting dialogue. The characters are flat and one dimensional. The plot is weak. There are no funny moments. The philosophy is meaningless and unrelated to the movie. This movie teaches us nothing and above all is not entertaining. I take it back there is one scene with Javier Bardem that made me chuckle but the rest is a waste of film. I would like to know who approved this script for production? It would be interesting to hear what they thought was good about it. Ridley Scott directing is a plus but the man has to have a good script..Score: 1/5
East CoastI have deleted this disturbing movie from my computer. Preview leads you to believe it will be a suspense/ thriller but I was really disappointed in this all star cast lending their talent to this. I watched the whole movie thinking it would get better. Serious disappointmentAfter being a fan of R. Scott for so many years, this was one of the biggest disappointments I’ve ever had watching a film. Style over substance. A bunch of high living, party people, taking risks and then having to deal with the results. I kept thinking that something substantial was going to happen. Nope. I wish I had read the reviews before renting this. 2 hours I’ll never get back. I really don’t need to spend money to watch people I wouldn’t even want to meet doing terrible things to each other for profit. Worse yet - no moral really. The most despicable character gets away with their deceptive, parasitic greedy ways… I’m so sick of movies which mean, say and offer nothing, except stylized depictions of the dregs of society. Back to foreign films for me - where there is some real depth to the characters..Score: 1/5
