In the midst of WWII a small group of art experts are commissioned by Roosevelt as soldiers and sent to the european theater to protect historically important buildings and monuments, and to locate vast troves of priceless art looted by the nazis. Discovering art in castles and mines, they race against time as the nazis scramble to destroy everything they can.
Based on the true story of the greatest treasure hunt in history, The Monuments Men is an action drama focusing on seven over-the-hill, out-of-shape museum directors, artists, architects, curators, and art historians who went to the front lines of WWII to rescue the world’s artistic masterpieces from Nazi thieves and return them to their rightful owners. With the art hidden behind enemy lines, how could these guys hope to succeed?

Sorry, but I thought it was a triumph!I have been watching movies all my life and I think this one hit the mark as it was intended. Seems so many have forgotten that you are supposed to use your imagination when watching a movie. No matter how true the subject matter no one can make it come to life again but this was a story about a handful of ordinary men who risked everything to try to save the works of an entire civilization and did a pretty darn good job of it too. Let us remember the actual people who did this great service to mankind and honor those who tried to share it with us. Nothing is perfect but I would give this movie a great job well done..Score: 5/5

Great potential, mediocre executionOthers have reviewed the story line, so I will not. This is a classic example of why the same person should not direct, produce, write, and star in the same movie. There needs to be a creative tension in at least one (preferably more than one) of these key roles. As it is, the movie is "a whole" that is less "than the sum of its parts." The writing is good. The production is good. The acting is good. The directing is ok. But the overall movie is meh. The problem is that there is no dramatic tension that drives this movie. It focuses too little on the individuals to be a character study. It spends too little time in action sequences to have a sense of pacing. It fails to develop plot lines for two divergent/convergent story lines (Clooney’s role/story line, and Matt Damon’s separate role/story line). As a result the movie is spread too thin to do anything really well. And this is the almost an inevitable result of a single person being in all the key creative roles: how does he advocate with himself to determine the driving force of the movie as a whole? He cannot, of course. He is equally committed to the writing, direction, production, and the acting. All suffer because none of those roles are competing for focus. And so we have a mediocre presentation of a mildly entertaining storyline that is entirely too pedantic to really build a sense of drama or tension. Should you rent it? Sure. It’s a story about something important. There is a message worth hearing about the value of art. And, as Herman Wouk way more eloquently reminded us 40 years ago, we should read about (in this case see a movie about) war so that we remember..Score: 3/5

Nice Movie, Interesting StoryI'm an art buff, and I really enjoyed this movie. There were a few forced bits in the script, but overall the story and characters were very interesting. What an important role these men played in preserving millions of great works of art in the aftermath of WWII. Actual history, well doneThis should have been classed as a documentary because of its adherence to the facts of what was actually done during World War II. Not a great as dramas go, but then again, nothing on film can actually convey the intense, unrelenting danger these men faced in their recovery operations from little-to-lose SS stormtroopers and die-hard Gestapo agents of the Third Reich. These men faced far more danger as many went undercover, parachuted into occupied France, Belgium and Holland during the latter half of WWII: they faced firing squads if captured — as many of those who were fighting in the resistance did who aided them directly and indirectly. Overall, A- for effort, D for execution: overall grade: C-..Score: 3/5
The Monuments MenThis movie starts at a snails pace and then hits the brakes. Classic movie where too many stars and not enough time to appease all the egos, instead they opt to try and work in too long and drawn out scenes for each and end up with a slow disconnected mess - to bad, its a great story.Score: 2/5
