Predictably the professional critics liked this thin reboot, in the same way they almost always love the latest superhero or comic book confection, with high praise over too little depth. I saw this Apes reboot around the time it was released, and don’t recall much at the moment, except that I found it disappointing, the CGI so overdone that it was not compelling, just cartoonish cat dazzling, an all too frequent movie pitfall, fluffing some ham-handed science fiction elements that are too key to the plot for the production not to take more seriously. The only one of the 3 Apes reboots that I liked at all was the first one from 2001. Despite any faults with plot or science fiction, it use of CGI is measured, a property that keeps many more actual objects and actors in camera frames, thus constraining the movie and its story from completely giving away to overlong outlandish computer cartoons that do nothing but draw the eye and bore the mind.

I liked this movie because the apes came off as realistic while the humans in the film did not. As a kid I really dug the tv show and of course the original movies are great, so it is cool they did a good job of both these modern remakes.
  • A great sequel and a true addition to planet of the apes collection

I can now almost forget the abomination that was the 2001 version of the planet of the apes. This was an incredible movie that I could watch again and again without getting bored. I only wish buck hadn't died in the first one because Luca the new gorilla is awesome but not as great as buck. Koba is an incredible antagonist, because he considers himself helping the apes because he truly suffered at the hands of humans, and that was tragic. I cannot wait for the sequel, I'm just mad they pushed it back to 2017!!! I hope koba survived because he is such a great character, they seem to imply that in the credits listen carefully!!! Also if you wanna learn more about koba and his past READ DAWN OF THE PLANET OF THE APES: FIRESTORM! IT TELLS YOU ALL ABOUT WHAT KOBA ENDURED AND THE RELATIONSHIP HE BUILT WITH CAESAR!! GREAT BOOK!!

I suppose the Rotten Tomato rating system is a blessing and a curse. On the one hand, I get to avoid wasting good money on a lot of bad movies that I might otherwise have thought had potential. On the other hand, when a movie scores above 90% I have come to expect that it is in an elite category of films. If I had watched this movie before seeing the aggregated RT score, I would have guessed it would have fallen, at best, in the 60-80% range among top critics, and I wouldn’t have been surprised if it fell below 60%. Substantively, there were some good acting performances by the leads. But the story was predictable, the writing was average at best, and I wasn’t blown away by the special effects. The message is good but unoriginal. If you’re a fan of the Planet of the Apes saga, you’ll probably like this movie. I’m just glad I didn’t waste $30 going to the theaters to watch this. In all, the 91% rating distorts the truly average nature of this movie.

The movie itself was beautiful but the plot was boring and predictable. The movie didn't make me laugh or cry and was relatively emotionless. Overall, I would not recommend seeing this.

Dawn is one of 2014’s best movies with a strong script, great performances and direction, mind-blowing realistic visuals, and brilliant storytelling.

If your a fan of the "Ape" films then you'll love this movie. You forget you're watching CG actors and become immersed in a world that's so refreshingly original and well paced. I wish there was more Gary Oldman, though. Looking forward to the next one!
  • Oo Oo Ah Ah? No. Wait for HBO!

Ok, if you're into watching a bunch of animations interact with eachother for 90 minutes, this is your thing. No disrespect, but if Gary Aldman is the most famous guy in your movie, and plays second fiddle to the animated apes, you MIGHT have yourself a B-movie ... Wait. (Since I started buying movies instead of renting, I've regreted it. I always think I'll watch it again, then it pops up on HBO. Ugh.) I don't even think I'll give this one another try ...

This was a huge disappointment. I had enjoyed most of the previous 'Apes' movies. In fact the more recent ones had been very intriguing. 'Dawn of the Planet..' was not. It was so full of plot cliches and plot device cliches I made a game of predicting the next scene or event. I was mostly correct in my predictions. Otherwise, the movie was pretty boring.
  • Entertaining, but no real story.

Seems more like a setup for the next film rather than a whole film. It was entertaining up until half way through, then it sort of loses direction and nothing gets resolved.
  • Bad plot great effects.
