Brendan Gleeson delivers “a truly sensational performance” (Total Film) in this “wickedly funny black comedy” (Time Out) from acclaimed writer-director John Michael McDonagh (The Guard). When a good priest (Gleeson) is threatened by a mysterious member of his parish, he feels sinister forces closing in and begins to wonder if he will have the courage to face his own personal Calvary.
After being threatened during a confession, a good-natured priest must battle the dark forces closing in around him.

If this town existed ...... We might want to have walls built around it. Everyone in town essentially seems evil, with their main hobby being to torment the priest (Gleeson's performance is wonderful, actually) with their own vileness, taunt him with stories of how his God is cruel to children, call his daughter a prostitute, threaten him, fling cigarettes at him, mock his faith with their sexual and violent predilection. I wanted to like the movie but it just made me think about math. Nobody draws a parish like this. Nobody. And I've left out the most egregious of the assaults against him..Score: 2/5
Terrific movies! Beautifully acted, beautifully filmed! This is one of the best movies I have seen in years! Being in my 60s I have become bored and critical of most recent movies, having seen so many of the same story lines and plot twists played and replayed over and over---same stuff, different day. This is truly the first fresh film I have seen in years! I was born and raised in an Irish Catholic family. Once a candidate for the priesthood. Lived the changing moral views of the 60s, 70s, and 80s, and was close to the Boston abuse scandal. MI could identify with the torrent of attitudes and emotions of all the characters. This is as real as a film can get. Gleason was superb and deserves an Oscar! The film is beautifully crafted, not a word of dialog is wasted, exquisitely photographed! If you enjoy anything more than trite entertainment, then do not miss this film!.Score: 5/5
Very engaging, very depressingTop marks to the actors here - especially Gleeson. The dialogue is quick, engaging and thought-provoking. But the ending of the movie is what may keep this from being something you would watch again. I found the ending very disappointing and not what I would have liked, nor what I think would have served the story best - gritty realism aside. I was left with a feeling of having seen a slightly unfinished and sad story - which is a feeling I prefer not to have after watching a movie..Score: 4/5
Dark, Bleak, Depressing, and PointlessThis film was marketed as a "black comedy." It was not - though it was certainly black. Nothing funny happening here by a long mile. It's an awful film - a depressing and grim story. Not a single character is redeemable, nor do any of them seem to want to be redeemed. As I watched, I was wondering if there were some deeper meaning to the film that I was missing: is Gleeson's character supposed to be Christ-like? Are the people of the town emblematic of the evils of the World? In the end, I just wanted it to be over so I could go take a shower and wash away the sick feeling this film gave me. Avoid this film unless you're feeling suicidal. It's too heavy by far..Score: 1/5
Depressing and PointlessSpoiler Alert, Sort Of: Please know there is a graphic violent end to the film. Also an episode of animal cruelty. There is one fine performance. But the ending is contrived to produce a whopping big pay-off by killing off the one admirable character to no purpose whatsoever. There is no point to the film. Although we were considering a trip the very afternoon before we saw Calvary, we cannot even think about visiting Ireland now..Score: 1/5
SuperbThe strong and touching performance by Brendan Gleeson, and the smart and witty screenplay by John Michael McDonagh is what makes this film one of the best of the year..Score: 5/5
Oh DearDepressing, bleak and pointless. This is no more than a miscellany of scenes with no direction or theme and certainly no point and no connection. Some scenes are good, in the way that an advertisement might be good. Good in spots and altogether dreadful. We are entitled to expect more from a movie than watching Brendan Gleeson being brilliant..Score: 1/5

This flick......is definately Irish. Everything and everyone is consumed by not only 'bad luck' but ever present faith amidst the rubble of the Irish Catholic Church. This film might very well represent Brendon Gleeson's finest work. And all the other players, including an ancient M. Emmet Walsh, are superb. This film is the darkest of Irish comedy in, of all things, a Shakespearean sense of the word 'comedy'. Be forewarned...you will not laugh!!!.Score: 5/5
