The road to greatness can take you to the edge.. Under the direction of a ruthless instructor, a talented young drummer begins to pursue perfection at any cost, even his humanity.. Whiplash Wiki
great big band. Are you a rusher or a dragger. It doesn’t matter for drumming enthusiasts
The writing of the scores and the directing of the music performance was fabulous. Some acting moments were good but overall it is a weak script, underwritten - or over edited in production - and over-acted without motivation, … unless it was produced purely for the depiction of abuse. If you are an artist, or a teacher, or a musician save yourself from this abuse and pick something worthwhile to watch. Or just listen to some great jazz, … .
Great acting. Great music. Shows how tough the jazz idiom is. I finally appreciate how tightly integrated jazz bands have to be and the subtleties of perfection.
Really enjoyed the story and acting. Not standard Hollywood fare. Maybe a five star movie but I'm a tough critic. I will watch his again.
Amazing movie - maybe the best I've seen this decade.
At the minimum it’s — badly written as a script; the “girlfriend” is a useless contribution to the plot; the drummer’s father has no contribution; the segues in plot development are weak and disjointed. The “ruthless” instructor betrays his own character and the student drummer is shallow and weak in his depiction of passion. It’s a badly portrayed romance of a very mediocre plot with a weak script.
Intense movie with amazing actors! Plus, the music is very good!
Wasn't prepared for how captivating and brutal a movie about jazz and drumming would be. Outstanding performances from all the actors, with a well deserved Oscar for JK Simmons. Check this one out!
While I am sure this well acted film will be enjoyable to most, to any of us who happen to be teachers at major music schools the premise is absurd. I started laughing at the first thrown cymbal and quit watching after 20 minutes. Barbaric teaching is a myth of the past.
Main character was so extreme he became a cartoon character. Over played. Tour de force in expletives, hate speech, and abuse. The twists and turns at the end almost made it worth watching.
