Jim Bennett--English professor by day, high-stakes gambler by night--bets it all when he borrows from a gangster and offers his own life as collateral. Bennett enters an illicit, underground world and takes the ultimate risk for a second chance.
Literature professor Jim Bennett leads a secret life as a high-stakes gambler. Always a risk-taker, Bennett bets it all when he borrows from a gangster and offers his own life as collateral. Staying one step ahead, he pits his creditor against the operator of an illicit gambling ring while garnering the attention of Frank, a paternalistic loan shark. As his relationship with a student deepens, Bennett must risk everything for a second chance.

Better Than I Thought...This was one of those movies I was a bit hesitant on even renting but, I was bored as hell and I thought... "sure... why not." Watch This MovieI’m honestly not sure why this movie is so underrated. It’s a tense, gritty, dark dramedy that had me hooked the entire time. It isn’t a slow movie, but it has a fair bit of intellectual thematics and dialogue that can get weighty, especially if you have the mental capacity of a child. If you want a popcorn blockbuster, go elsewhere. If you want a movie with some depth and content, look no further than The Gambler..Score: 5/5

Almost greatThis should have been the best film of 2014, but it is not quite there. Still, it's a helluva ride and tense, suspense, and Wahlberg was dense! The set up of this movie is extraordinary, and the scathing refutation of the Shakespeare controversy is spot on: it doesn't matter, whoever wrote the plays was a genius. Whalberg's nihilism and self destruction is both not delved into adequately and so tensely pounded it becomes painful to watch. He seems to want to live as a Camus character, suicidal because of the nihilistic universe; yet then he changes and maybe without enough reason. Brie Larson's character had lots more promise and could have been much more interesting. We never see a glimpse of why she is the genius writer no other students are. Probably the show stealer in this is Jessica Lange as the perhaps phony, but also loving mother who can let someone go but feels the sting. Why her son seems to hate her isn't clear either. Wahlberg indulges the risk as a true self destructive gambler would to the end - the theme of this movie being all or nothing. The writing in this has moments of astounding poetry, and perhaps challenges Camus' philosophy successfully, but alas, the film falls flat in the middle and seems to lose its critical focus. The end picks up again, but the all or nothing philosophy seems a pipe dream, and we don't know as these people will stay true once the credits roll. Can life be eternally "real"? Well, even if not, most of us may well crave more real contact, and it is one of the best fights to battle. Still, it was the movie with perhaps the most promise and best insights of 2014, with maybe the exception of Mr. Turner. Despite its bigger promise, it does deliver a great ride and some solid conflicts. It does what its characters want - to be real..Score: 4/5
