From the Oscar-winning producers of 12 Years a Slave comes a powerful true story starring David Oyelewo and Oprah Winfrey. Facing violent opposition, Martin Luther King, Jr., led a historic march from Selma to Montgomery, changing the world forever.
"Selma," as in Alabama, the place where segregation in the South was at its worst, leading to a march that ended in violence, forcing a famous statement by President Lyndon B. Johnson that ultimately led to the signing of the Voting Rights Act.

"Selma" teaches us what we need to do today.Selma is a teaching moment for election reform today. The eradication of Jim Crow as illustrated through “Selma", here’s how it works. Observation: before you tackle an issue, first you need to know that it exists. Jim Crow wasn’t a new discovery to African Americans around the country, but the majority of the white population wasn’t highly aware, didn’t care, or supported it. Understanding: before you can come up with appropriate remedies, you need to understand what the roots of the problem are and how they work. ML King and other African American leaders knew that Jim Crow was enabled through the electoral system, there was no accountability to the black community by office holders, and that blacks were prevented from registering to vote. They had to change voter registration laws. Johnson wasn’t helping, he was part of the problem. Technique: before you can solve the problem encountered, you need to come up with appropriate remedies and solutions. King and his team were attempting to have a national voting rights act passed to bypass the racist Southern state legislatures, that would supersede state laws, and allow them to vote. Attention: before you can gain traction with you remedies, you must gain the attention of large segments of the population, and force their “leaders” to deal with the issue. This was the magic moment in the film where King came back with the word “Drama”. They devised the march from Selma to Montgomery, knowing the local sheriff was a racist bully who would provoke a riot and violence. This is turn would gain national attention, and more importantly, force Johnson to act. Action: The end goal is action that remedies the problem. The march achieved its goal, it got Johnson’s attention. Unfortunately people died as a result and it took way too long to get elected officials to act. Johnson and Congress were forced to act, and they came back with the Voting Rights Act of 1965..Score: 5/5
