Russell Crowe's directorial debut, "The Water Diviner," is an epic and inspiring tale of one man's life-changing journey of discovery. Crowe plays Australian farmer Joshua Connor, who, in 1919, goes in search of his three missing sons, last known to have fought against the Turks in the bloody Battle of Gallipoli. Arriving in Istanbul, he is thrust into a vastly different world, where he encounters others who have suffered their own losses in the conflict: Ayshe (Olga Kurylenko), a strikingly beautiful but guarded hotelier raising a child alone; her young, spirited son, Orhan (Dylan Georgiades), who finds a friend in Connor; and Major Hasan (Yilmaz Erdoğan), a Turkish officer who fought against Connor's boys and who may be this father's only hope. With seemingly insurmountable obstacles in his path, Connor must travel across the battle-scarred Turkish landscape to find the truth…and his own peace.

Beautiful imageryI loved this movie. It was a real surprise to me. There was a lot of sensitivity and it showed a side of Crowe that I hadn’t really seen before. There are many subtle nuances in the visual aspects. The colors, color combinations, and visual compositions really add to the flavor of this film. While the topic is a difficult one the angst of having lost 3 sons is balanced by the the visual beauty.

Crowe is a magnificent director.So glad to have stumbled on this. Beautiful directing, acting and cinematography. A not well-known part of WW1 history (to me, anyway) comes to life with nuance and sensitivity. A full range of emotions give the story weight and contrast. The Water DivinerDidn’t know what to expect when I watched this movie, but the movie definitely exceeded my expectations. If you like good war drama’s this is the movie for you. I watched this movie start to finish without being distracted, it definitely kept my attention and had me waiting to see what happens next. Crowe did a great job directing, keeping a good story line with the necessary amount of battle scenes without going overboard with it.
