Christmas SpoilersSo, my Christmas was spoiled by the knowledge that al us fine folks in Region 1 (US & Canada) won’t be able to DL the episode until February 23, 2016. Of course this happened after I paid for it. Guess we’ll have to go to the cinema after all;-).Score: 5/5
Hello Sweetie!Spoilers This is likely the last River Song ep unless Moffat, or any other show runner, invokes Timey Whimey to have the brilliant Alex Kingston back on the show in some way. And I have to say…it is a fantastic send off to a wonderful character & a romance that I wasn’t sure about at first but which won me over over the seasons (& with different Doctors). I don’t want to spoil this too much as half the fun is the surprises this ep gives us. But there is a lot of payoff over things we knew about River and her relationship with The Doctor. And Capaldi & Kingston…their relationship in this ep is off the charts. Kudos on Capaldi for playing/channeling the history The Doctor has with River. And kudos on Kingston for the amazing chemistry she’s had with Peter Capaldi, Matt Smith, & David Tennant. (And Paul McGann if you listen to the Big Finish audio adventures.) As well as the depth & charisma she’s given River, who in the hands of a lesser actress would have the character…well we wouldn’t care half as much if Kingston wasn’t in the roll. The ending is bittersweet but as Amy Pond said in Series Five “(it’s) kind of a good hurt”. So you’ll cry but be ridiculously happy seeing that final scene. Wanting more but being so happy with what came before. It’s a perfect send off for River and far less depressing than what “The Name Of The Doctor” gave us. Some may criticize that the ep isn’t Christmas-y enough for a Holiday Special or hate that we have River back again. But I for one have not loved a Doctor Who Christmas Special like this in a long time. If you love River Song, The Doctor’s relationship with her, and some (mainly) lighthearted adventure with robots… Then this is most definitely the episode you need to have! Happy Holidays! Merry Christmas! And may you have a wonderful new year!.Score: 5/5

A worrying trendAfter both James Bond and Star Wars released fan serving movies at the end part of 2015, I had hoped that we'd see Doctor Who show them how to develop a continuing series with style with this year's christmas special. I was half right. The episode begins with the usual christmas fare for Doctor Who, a silly, inconsequential episode that fails to acknowledge events at the end of the previous series. But then it twists and provides the most visually stunning episode in the series' history. The story descends into fan service, retconning previous attempts at trying to tell the same story and bringing River Song's story full circle. The focus on fan service in the second half of the episode will not win any new viewers, while the first half would have even die-hards switching off. I also felt that the Doctor's chemistry with River was good in this episode. I haven't been impressed with Capaldi's performance so far, but this episode gave him more acting and less fooling around (which doesn't suit his stregnths, in my opinion)..Score: 4/5
