I hope the series continuesThe parts where it jumps back to documentary footage in the present day though it is interesting and technically works intersm of making the show much more realistic, are jarring and does interrupt the pace and drama. I also found some of the decsision that are made by characters not to make much sense, such as (spoiler alert) when they first land and the captain is injured, why did they not have the captain and the doctor and maybe one or two others stay with the lander, while the others went on to the base camp. That would have decreased the likelyhood of the rover breaking down and what happened tot he captain. However, in the end, I hope this series continues, it was well done and realistic and pulled me in,.Score: 3/5

Great material, stretched narrativeNow that the excellent run of "realistic" space movies -- Gravity, Interstellar, The Martian -- has ended, I am hoping this series will fill the vacuum (sorry). Having viewed episode 1, I'm cautiously optimistic. The foundation of the story is quite good (if reminiscent, so far, of "The Martian"). A choice was made to divide the narrative between 2016, presented in documentary form with interviews with folks like Elon Musk and Ann Druyan, and the fictional account set in 2033. This split asks a lot of the viewer. Personally, I found the narrative structure a distraction, but not enough to diminish my enjoyment of the thoughtful source material and subject matter..Score: 4/5

This is supposed to inspire us?Passionless crew making boneheaded mistakes. No way a commander would hide his injury. No way would a redundant wheeled rover die for one broken axel. Even if it was disabled, why transport the wounded commander by hand? Send a small team carrying nothing but O2 to get the OTHER rover at the base and bring him to the base! So stupid. Started out OK, then went from entertainment to shill."Mars" is panning out to be a plausible story line. Adventuring scientists go to Mars to do "sciency stuff" then get followed by business seeking profit, not unexpected. There is the personal drama linked with a little science (can a baby born on Mars really go home to Earth? Is Earth really home?) All in all a decent Sci fi flick, too bad Elon Musk et al are using it to shill for Greenpeace. Update 1/5/2019 - Just watched the latest episode, and they have gone over the edge. "Mars" is now a full blown condemnation of mankind and is unapologetically beating the "Manmade Climate Change" drum, and doing so based on false assumptions and pure innuendo. The current day scenes are a bit silly, NASA says global warming is real, and it is man made, and it is caused by too much CO2 in the atmosphere...their solution?? Fly jets all over the arctic putting more CO2 in the atmosphere exacerbating the problem to study the problem. Really guys? You are destroying what little credibility you had..Score: 1/5

Have some mercy on usTo some of us viewers, this show is a preview of what may one day be the last hope of the human race. We're taking those steps right along with the crew on Mars. We need for them to survive, be happy and thrive. I know it's considered cinematic to time the darkest moments to occur at the end of each one hour segment, but what would be wrong with revisiting the 1960s, and putting that darkest moment at the 50 minute mark, or 90% or whatever metric you wish, then give us some resolution? The depression is contagious. The suspense is torturous. Give us some relief so that we do not have to wait a week or a month until its return in the next episode to know what has happened. This is my one major criticism of the series. The 2016 documentary sections go on far too long, which by comparison is a minor criticism, although it is your answer to "where do we get the time to offer some denouement in each episode?" Cut a few minutes of Antartica, how about it? I honestly don't think it's healthy to play that cinematic tension game over weeks, when the show is engrossing at such a high-stakes level, leaving you stranded. One rationally presumes there will more more episodes, so the worst-case scenario won't happen, but it's a lot to ask that we must step outside the story's boundaries for the strength to go on. Maybe there is such a thing as too much realism. Even with that criticism, this series is amazing. I doubt that I will live to see this happen in real life, though one never knows! In any case I'm grateful for the preview and the hope..Score: 4/5

Slow death spiralThis series started out interestingly enough and promised to be a documentary/dramatization of what it will take to go to and establish a base of human habitation on Mars. Unfortunately with each succeeding episode the story is diluted more and more with fictionalized personal human interest narrative and less and less mission related story. The monotone and downbeat narration by the defacto mission leader didn't help. I kept watching, hoping for a turnaround, but finally admitted defeat..Score: 2/5

Not impressedThe first mistake they made was opening the show with a date-- 2033. For as long as Mars shows have been made, the date used is always just far enough into the future to seem plausible. This instantly dates it with a timeline that almost certainly will not be met. The second mistake they made was not sending two ships. If something goes wrong on the first one, the second one is right behind. If everything goes well, you now have twice the supplies. Why build one when you can build two at twice the price? Of all the things to cut costs on, the future of humanity is not it. The third mistake was shoehorning in a terrible made-for-tv docudrama.
