Not a Convincing Conclusion*Review contains Spoilers* For one thing, I feel sorry to have to write a negative review. The acting in Sherlock was top notch, as always. But it's the writing that went off the rails. The final episode in the show is like a horror movie. This episode, in particular, departs from the traditional format of Sherlock Holmes (in literature and film) to the point of being distracting, not convincing. It feels as if the writers wanted to make an edgy departure, in order to raise the stakes, and instead put me through minutes upon minutes of overboiled "tension." While the Sign of Three was brilliantly convincing, and departed from the traditional format in an interesting way, The Final Problem departs from the format of Sherlock Holmes by not remaining faithful to the key tenet of all Sherlock Holmes stories...that is: 1. Deductions are explicable 2. Deductions are believable Besides this, the atomsphere should never devolve into something like "Criminal Minds." The Final Problem has a problem--that is, Eros is not believable. The idea of Eros, another sibling, is brilliant. The idea of Eros simultaneously being a total unstable maniac and "an Era defining Genius", is not convincing. It was obvious from the way the writer's kept using the words "sociopath" and "psychopath" interchangably, but they clearly don't have any proper ideas about severe mental-illness. Empathy is interrelated to understanding human nature, and understanding human nature is the foundation of most Sherlockian Deductions. Even if Sherlock is cold, it's too much of a stretch to grant that level of brilliance to someone THAT unstable. My point is, no one who's crazy isn't flawed. And no one who actually might be a genius, doesn't have flaws in their intelligence. There's fly in everyone's ointment, and building up Eros as an Uber-Sherlock, something so infallible, ends up looking ridiculous. Her deductions can't be explained, because the scope is too extreme. The point of most absurdity was in the conclusion. Redbeard was a BRILLIANT twist. But her motivation was for...attention? What? If you're going to tell me an intellectual demigod is doing everything for attention, then CONVINCE me. Don't attempt to heap another twist on me. Redbeard was enough. The cooldown from that twist should have been convincing me as to her supposed emotional complexity, and apparent need for love. It's illogical to the extrem. And justfying the plot as "well she's crazy, so it makes sense to her" isn't enough. One last point: teasing Moriarty's return, to that extent, was pushing the envelope. Again, this is difficult to criticize because Eros's actress, and everyone else, did a remarkably brilliant job. I just wish the writing was much more together..Score: 2/5
