Big Little Lies, Season 1 poster

Based on Liane Moriarty's bestselling book, this subversive, darkly comedic drama series tells the tale of three mothers of first-graders whose seemingly perfect lives unravel to the point of murder. Reese Witherspoon, Nicole Kidman and Shailene Woodley head up a stellar cast in this Monterey-set drama that begins with a suspicious homicide at an elementary-school fundraiser. Though the victim and the perpetrator initially remain a mystery, it appears that the murder was spawned by rivalries and secrets surrounding the trio of young moms. Alexander Skarsgard, Laura Dern, Adam Scott, Zoe Kravitz, James Tupper and Jeffrey Nordling co-star. Big Little Lies, Season 1 Wiki

Big Little Lies, Season 1 Synopsis

1 - Somebody's Dead
Series premiere. In the affluent beachfront community of Monterey, CA, a fundraiser for the local elementary school has gone horribly wrong--someone is dead, and school moms Madeline Mackenzie, Celeste Wright, Jane Chapman and Renata Klein may have had something to do with it. Though the victim and perpetrator remain a mystery, it's clear that the battle lines leading to this fateful night were drawn at first-grade orientation a few weeks earlier, when Renata's daughter Amabella accuses Ziggy, son of new arrival and single mom Jane, of hurting her during class. Madeline, who recently befriended Jane and who has a pre-existing beef with Renata, sticks up for the mother and her little boy. Later, Madeline bristles when her teen daughter Abigail opines that her mom is still infatuated with her ex, Nathan, and his new wife Bonnie--a feeling shared by Madeline's husband Ed. Meanwhile, after Madeline's best friend Celeste fills in her husband Perry about the kerfuffle at school, the couple end up in an unexpectedly volatile argument.

3 - Serious Mothering
Jane tries to keep it together as Ziggy queries why they moved to Monterey--a question for which she has no easy answers. Madeline gets news that her community-theater production might get derailed, and is outraged to learn that Renata is throwing a birthday party for Amabella and didn't invite Ziggy. Citing tensions from the night before, Celeste suggests to Perry that they see a counselor after he returns from his latest business trip. Nathan and Ed meet in hopes of smoothing out the tensions between their wives, and themselves.

4 - Living the Dream
Hoping to get under Renata's skin, Madeline organizes a trip to compete with Amabella's birthday party. After another argument, Celeste succumbs to Perry's charms before their first session with a therapist, Dr. Amanda Reisman. Madeline gets called for a meeting with Abigail's guidance counselor. Principal Nippal announces the theme for the Fall Gala Fundraiser; later, Jane seeks Madeline's help with Ziggy's family tree project, and opens up about her past.

Celeste prepares for a city-council meeting about Madeline's play, and bristles at Perry's concerns about her returning to work. Jane meets with Ziggy's teacher, Ms. Barnes, who suggests Ziggy be medically evaluated in light of further evidence of classroom bullying. While Madeline is confronted by a skeleton from her past, her internet sleuthing reveals a key player from Jane's past instead.

Beyond EXPECTATIONS!  sdhinnant  5 star

I watched just to see what the fuss was all about this show. I was drawn into watching the entire season in a day! I loved it! I am excited to see season 2 especially with Meryl Streep involved in second season! Remarkable!

Amazing💯  [email protected]  5 star

One of the best shows I have ever watched. Can not wait for season two!!

Overrated  AHS2004  2 star

The actors are good but the story is overly familiar and too reliant on murder mystery tropes.

Watch it - highly recommend!  Vivien65  5 star

Great series...I read the book, and the series was slightly different, but amazing and powerful. Nicole Kidman is fantastic in this role. Beautiful scenery, and great music to complement one of the best, dramatic series I've ever seen. Even better than the book.

Amazing fav new tv series ❤️❤️❤️

yawn  Ri.C.B.  3 star

an afternoon soap opera set in prime time - a bunch of bored, and boring, suburban housewives cannot contain their worst instincts, and pull out their claws to vicious effect, bad direction, bad editing, bad cinematography, bad lighting, but pretty amazing acting throughout

Outstanding & Powerful!  oncanuck  5 star

Outstanding series and superb acting, too. Nicole Kidman's performance is brutally powerful -- as is Alexander Skarsgård's. The ending will leave you dumbfound. "Big Little Lies" deserves all its recognition and accolades.

Incredibly beautiful, powerful, intense - wow.

Great Show, Hilarious Price  matthewjcorrigan  3 star

Good show to watch, kind of an adult take on a murder disaster including sexual aggression... a lot of it but what the hell is up with this price? Real shows with millions of viewers up to Season 8 don’t even cost this much! No show is worth almost $5 an episode. You’ll be cancelled before season 3 even crosses your minds if this is the kind of financial support they’re hoping for.

The 1st episode had me captivated and intrigued wanting to watch more. Especially after reading the incredible reviews from others who have watched the series. But my question is.. where is episode 2? Is there not one? I purchased the whole season, however Ep. 2 is not there!

Like going out to the Movies!!  Bright Bright bright bright  5 star

I was totally shocked & really surprised to see some of my favourite big budget MOVIE STARS on the small screen! But I honestly shouldn't have been 🤷‍♀️ After all, that seems to be the Hollywood "it" thing to do nowadays!! Having this all star cast wrapped into one weekly TV show meant made buying it a no brainer 😉 Another attraction was the price (quite the bargain compared to one night out at the movies watching just one of these leading ladies on the big screen for approximately two hours!) AND let me tell you straight up, the series is definitely worth every penny!! After the first episode I was hooked! It's an instant "who done it" that grabs you until the very end; It made me laugh right off the bat 😉 It's dramatic in all the right places (without overdoing it). Personally, I don't think it fall into just one genre either. It's honestly a little bit of everything mixed into one 👍 It's wonderfully written and has several unexpected twists and turns! The acting is first class (and not just by the "movie stars" who you'd naturally expect it from) The husbands, supporting counterparts and EVERY CHILD actor are extraordinary!!! Quite frankly, all of those "lesser known" actors give this series it's backbone and I couldn't imagine the show without them!! No doubt these younger actors will be the next generation of Hollywood's elite players!! I really can't say enough about how entertaining and thrilling this series was to watch 🙌 I can only cross my fingers that it'll have a second season!!🤞🙏🏼🤞 With all that being said 😉 of course I give the show FIVE BRIGHT BRIGHT STARS 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 A MUST have to add to your binge worthy collection!! You won't regret it 👍

Loved it. Captivated me in a way that hasn't been done  ManthaMom  5 star

Awesome. Want more
