The drama series, based on the award-winning, best-selling novel by Margaret Atwood, is the story of life in the dystopia of Gilead, a totalitarian society in what was formerly part of the United States. Facing environmental disasters and a plunging birthrate, Gilead is ruled by a twisted fundamentalism regime that treats women as property of the state. As one of the few remaining fertile women, Offred (Elisabeth Moss) is a Handmaid in the Commander’s household, one of the caste of women forced into sexual servitude as a last desperate attempt to repopulate a devastated world. In this terrifying society where one wrong word could end her life, Offred navigates between Commanders, their cruel Wives, domestic Marthas, and her fellow Handmaids -- where anyone could be a spy for Gilead -- all with one goal: to survive and find the daughter that was taken from her.

A preposterous story very well toldWhether or not you buy its message, you gotta admit it's very well done. Yes, like most single-issue sci-fi the story is preposterously heavy-handed. But it looks great, it's intelligently written and directed, and the cast is very good. Elisabeth Moss is an expert at showing her character's thoughts and feelings in the slightest facial tics -- though I could do with fewer of the extreme Easter Island close-ups as she's doing that. (And I wish she wasn't a freaking Scientologist. Yeah, I know she was raised in it. I was raised Catholic, but I grew up.) Yvone Strahovski is riveting as the insanely frustrated wife; Joseph Fiennes is ultra-slimy as the creepy husband; and most everyone else does very well. It's grimly one-note in ways that can make it hard to stick with at times, but it wraps up the season pretty triumphantly. And kudos for the excellent timing of coming out just as the real America is going cuckoo in mildly similar and sinister ways. As exaggerated as the story is, it actually makes more sense now than when Atwood's novel originally appeared..Score: 4/5

A MasterpieceThe Handmaid’s Tale might go down as one of the best American television productions of all time. It’s both different from Margaret Atwood’s book and very true to it. Some characters are expanded (June’s husband Luke has a much bigger presence) and the series ends on a cliffhanger (setting up season 2) while the book has a definite ending. The writing and direction are impeccable but this is really about the performances, which are excellent. Elizabeth Moss, who’s been on a roll since Mad Men, is haunting as June/Offred. The direction relies on her ability to communicate wordlessly, and it does so by a series of extreme closeups, where she uses her eyes to communicate her fear, her hope, or her anger. If you think you knew Alexis Bledel from the Gilmore Girls, think again. As Ofwarren, she plays a former gay college lecturer physically trapped but struggling in her mind to be free. And Yvonne Strzechowski, best known as the glamorous watcher/spy in NBC’s Chuck, is perfect as Serena Joy, the icy matriarch supporting the patriarchy. Even if you know her from Chuck, you may not recognize her as Serena Joy. This is not a particularly easy show to watch. It’s revolves around women held as slaves being systematically raped to provide children for the rulers of a Christofascist theocracy. In addition to the rapes, which have been ritualized in the name of religion, there is some brief violence that is shocking. I can’t call this family entertainment. I can call it compelling and important..Score: 5/5

An unquestionable masterpieceI was hesitant to watch this show. It didn’t look like anything special from the previews and trailers. But I decided to give it a try. And let me tell you... I have never been so moved by anything in my entire life. I think it really begins with the masterful cinematography, directing, and writing. The script is gritty, and real. Though what really won me over was the state-of-the-art performance from Elisabeth Moss. A prodigy in this industry. Claire Foy has NOTHING on her. She can say something and make you believe it, or she can say nothing and you will know what her character is feeling. If you don’t watch this series, you’re missing out.
