Our heroes finally reach Vermilion City. They make their way to the Pokémon Center to refill their empty stomachs, but once there, they see dozens of injured Pokémon being treated. Pikachu and Ash are alarmed to learn that all of these Pokémon were injured in battles with the Vermilion Gym Leader, Lt. Surge. Nonetheless, eager to earn a badge, Ash challenges Lt. Surge. Pikachu reluctantly enters the battle only to discover that its opponent is a Raichu, a fierce Pokémon with tremendous electric power—and the evolved form of Pikachu! In order for Pikachu to successfully compete, it must demonstrate a stronger will in battle than ever before. Could Pikachu possibly have a chance against Raichu’s overwhelming strength?
Ash and his friends board the cruise ship St. Anne, thanks to tickets provided by Jessie and James in disguise. Their latest plan is to lure Pokémon Trainers onto the ship and steal their Pokémon!
After an ambush by Team Rocket aboard the St. Anne cruise ship, a powerful storm blew in, forcing everyone except the villains and our heroes to abandon the sinking ship! Luckily, Ash was able to reverse a previous trade and get his Butterfree back before the boat went down, but now our heroes are forced to team up with their long-standing enemies in order to survive this submerged and sticky situation!
As our heroes and Team Rocket beat the odds by surviving the sinking ship, they are dragged into another perilous situation when the Atrocious Pokémon, Gyarados, attacks them. One Gyarados is soon joined by many, and Ash, friends, and foes are swept up in a monstrous Dragon Rage that sets them down in various places around an island. Ash loses Pikachu and the Poké Balls containing Charmander, Squirtle, and Bulbasaur. Jessie and James from Team Rocket, who land in another remote part of the island, also lose their Pokémon. Thus both Pokémon and Trainers are left searching for each other on this strange island, inhabited by gigantic Pokémon. Where could this island be?
Our heroes arrive at Porta Vista, where a ferryboat line runs to the mainland. There they meet Nastina, a wealthy lady who wants to construct a huge luxury hotel and turn the island’s coral reef area into a tremendous resort. This section of coral reef, however, is very important to the Tentacool and Horsea that live there. When a huge school of Tentacool interferes with the construction of the hotel, Nastina organizes a campaign to drive them away, offering an incredible reward to anyone who can repel the Tentacool. Naturally this draws the attention of Team Rocket, who attempts to get rid of the Tentacool by spreading a mixture of soy and vinegar over the ocean. However, their plan backfires, as the potent potion transforms the Tentacool into a gigantic Tentacruel that begins a fierce counterattack upon Porta Vista. In order to defeat this reign of terror, Ash, Misty, Brock, and their Pokémon are drawn into a battle that will require more than just strong combative skill!
After leaving Porta Vista in search of Saffron City, our heroes finally arrive at a small port town in the middle of celebrating a summer festival. In order to recover from their hard journey, Ash and his party decide to relax and enjoy the festivities. Team Rocket’s interest in the carnival, on the other hand, is purely monetary. Brock and James discover a bewitching picture scroll in a shrine that only opens on the day of the summer festival, showing a beautiful young maiden in a scene from the legend of Maiden Rock—a point on a cape near the town. According to the guide’s explanation, the girl in the picture lived 2,000 years ago and awaited the return of a sweetheart captured in battle, until she finally turned into stone. Legend has it that every year, at this season, the ghost of this girl steals the spirit of a young man…could it be James or Brock?!
As they journey toward Saffron City, our heroes come to a path that continues along the side of a sheer cliff. When the party sees a flock of Butterfree flying above the ocean, Brock, as a Pokémon breeder, explains that it is the Butterfree’s Egg season. During this time, Butterfree are supposed to find partners and travel together across the sea. Ash releases his Butterfree, sending it off toward the flock. His Butterfree performs a dance to attract a pink Butterfree, but is firmly rejected. Ash, Misty, and Brock try to encourage Butterfree, but it can’t recover from the shock of rejection. Just then, Team Rocket arrives with plans to pinch the Pokémon, and Ash’s Butterfree attempts to defend the flock with little success. Determined to free them and win the heart of the pink Butterfree, it battles Team Rocket with the strength and courage of a Pokémon in love. Can Ash’s Butterfree rescue its fellow Butterfree and win over its pink sweetheart?
The party finally arrives in Saffron City, where a young girl commands a Gym of Pokémon that use psychic powers. If Ash defeats Gym Leader Sabrina, he will earn his fourth Pokémon League badge—the Marsh Badge. Gathering all their strength, Ash and Pikachu challenge her. She happily accepts, but on one odd condition: if Ash loses, our heroes must become her friends! The Gym battle begins, but Pikachu is helpless against Sabrina’s Abra. To make matters worse, Abra evolves during the match, turning into the fearsome Kadabra, which employs far greater psychic power against Pikachu. With Kadabra’s help, Sabrina defeats Ash.
After being defeated by Sabrina, Ash realizes that he must catch a Ghost-type Pokémon to defeat the Saffron Gym Leader’s awesome Psychic-type Pokémon. He heads for Pokémon Tower in Lavender Town, where they are said to dwell.
Leaving Pokémon Tower with Haunter in tow, Ash returns to Saffron City with only one goal in mind: to win a Gym Badge from the powerful Psychic-type Gym Leader, Sabrina!
When Ash tries to catch a wild Mankey, it loses its cool and uses Thrash on the whole gang—even stealing Ash’s hat! Will Ash find a way to pacify this pugnacious Pokémon?
The party arrives in Celadon City, a perfectly pleasant town full of large department stores, chic condos, and fancy arcades. Brock and Misty are mesmerized and soon end up being persuaded by a pretty girl selling perfume. Appalled by the price of the perfume, Ash is kicked out of the department store and heads for the Celadon Gym alone. But when he gets there, he is denied entry—it seems the perfume Ash criticized in the department store is produced inside! Brock and Misty soon arrive, entering the Gym and befriending those inside. But Ash must go to some outrageous lengths in order to even set foot in this Gym, let alone be deemed worthy to battle Gym Leader Erika!
Our heroes come to a town where a large number of children have gone missing. Working with Officer Jenny to search for the lost kids, they begin their investigation at the Pokémon Center. When they ask Nurse Joy about the disappearances, it’s obvious that she has other concerns: for some unknown reason, the Pokémon she treats aren’t getting well at all! Officer Jenny reveals that a mysterious Sleep Wave has been passing in and out of the town for several days. Our heroes suspect a connection between the missing children and the Pokémon’s poor condition. Hot on their heels, Team Rocket begins a sinister search of its own for the source of the Sleep Waves. But what could it be?

As they continue their journey, our heroes wander into even more bizarre adventures: being trampled by a squad of stampeding Exeggutor, playing nurse at a Pokémon Center, and finding themselves at the mercy of a Jigglypuff whose song puts anyone who hears it to sleep! Amidst all the chaos, Ash uncovers a Pokémon Egg, and his Charmeleon saves the day by evolving into Charizard to take on Aerodactyl, a newly revived Pokémon from the ancient world!
