Way to aim for the middleWant a GOOD period cop show? Try the German-language BABYLON BERLIN on Netflix. Daniel Brühl and the production values are the only good things about this. It’s heavy-handed and spoon-fed like everything Turner produces. There’s no effort to explain the motivations of any of the major characters, even halfway through the second episode. The source material isn’t the greatest, but anyone could’ve improved upon the Carr novel. Pass..Score: 2/5

An amazing soundtrack.This a dark and sometimes disturbing psychological thriller. The amazing sets and costuming is excellently done. I love the soundtrack and hope they eventually release it for purchase. The story is well cast with great actors. I'm excited to see how the story continues..Score: 5/5
Meh...nothing to write home about.Didn't knock my socks off, didn't bore me. First episode spent way too much time on the "gritty realism" (which always feels fake) of the time, and failed to engage the characters with the audience. Dakota Fanning is the only reason I'll be tuning into Episode 2..... which was boring AF..Score: 2/5
Meh...never picks up4 episodes in and you just never get to the point of caring about any of the characters. For such talented actors the acting is atrocious...you can't shake the feeling you are watching community theatr, amateurish overly exaggerated pauses and oddly paced delivery of lines. The sets however are wonderfully done..Score: 2/5
Hints at undercurrentsWorth watching. Choppy story editing at times, but never lost my interest. Especially enjoyed the last episode. Atmosphere of the time period, character study was fantastic. So much hinted at but not explored in the story lines. Each character could have had their own series. Layered.Score: 4/5
Satisfying in every way-perfect for the 19th century voyeur!“The Alienist” with it’s dark, dangerous atmosphere, excellent acting, and equally fascinating characters full of depth and substance, makes for an excellent opportunity to be the voyeur. Looking in from the outside at the many different layers of 19th century society you may empathize with the immigrants, or perhaps align with the industry barons, the “old money” families represented by the “300”. Then, there’s the corrupt police department with the honest commissioner, Theodore Roosevelt, working with Dr. Lazlo Kreitzler, the Alienist, (who is just beginning to receive some serious recognition for his science), to solve a grisly series of child prostitute murders and mutilations. This show is not for the weak of heart, nor should it be casually watched by young children, in whom it most certainly will cause sleepless nights. But if you, like I, enjoy a well acted, well written murder mystery that will keep you on the edge of your seat for the entire time it’s on, only to be disappointed when the credits roll that you have to wait another week to see what happens next, then, this is the SHOW FOR YOU!!!.Score: 5/5
