Courageous, sophisticated, considerate portrayalsHave an open mind, be prepared to face your desires and fears. The audience looking for power-porn and plot-driven superficial-supers will be disappointed. This is a sophisticated teen show that will leave immature, and perhaps some overly-mature audiences behind. The characters are clever, but seldom too clever, so some watchers will probably not understand, and others will not stand for the authentic awkwardness of being 16, 17 and 18. This is in many ways an unconventional show that treats its teen subjects and best audience with respect, takes time to develop its characters and their powers. Like a good parent, the show is supportive not directive, allows them to fail, even repeatedly. Our understanding grows along with theirs, so at times be prepared to be as confused, and as impatient as they. The interactions between Tyrone and Tandy are complicated by class, race, sex, youth and gender, and even more so by their symbiotic powers. While they gain critical insights on the first handful from family, friends, adversaries and experience, when it comes to their powers they have no one but each other on whom to rely. The show centers around their explorations together with special, delightful attention to their city’s culture and history. As they learn about themselves and their abilities, they grow closer, a closeness that will be required for them to discover the full extent of their capabilities. Sex, drug use, peer and financial pressures are for the most part dealt with matter-of-factly. The girls and women are developed proportionately to the boys and men, will be seen by many as strong female characters. Unapologetically psychological, while it delivers some action in every episode at its best the show conveys small quiet moments, glimpses into the hearts of its subjects and their story. Imaginative and very true to the original story it seems many reviewers do not remember, at times almost transgressive without Legion’s melodrama, Cloak & Dagger may push familiar boundaries enough to make many feel uncomfortable, probably because they aren’t used to such respect. With fine writing, acting and impeccable direction, this is a show that even fails well, aiming high. My favorite Marvel adaption to date, I hope it gets the audience and accolades it deserves. Really frustratingNothing happened for the first 3 or 4 episodes and then when things start to pick up a little, you realize that you could watch the final 10 minutes of each episodes and you'd be good.
