Sometimes the classics are the best. The Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy BBC television adaptation actually covers the eponymous novel as well as it's first sequel, The Restaurant At The End Of The Universe and features members from the original radio dramatization, which predates the book too. Originally aired in 1981 on BBC Two, in many ways despite the dating of the effects, the limitations together with the clever writing and inventive makeup as well as the cast manage to create the illusion of a much larger universe waiting to be explored and as a result adds to the sense of wonder one got from the radio and book versions. What makes the TV series work as well as the books is in it's own way, Author and Creator Douglas Adams manages to create a universe where no matter how absurd it gets, it stays consistent to the rules that are setup and in doing so becomes a truly believable science fiction universe, which it parodies. There is a humorous sense of futility to the story and the episodic nature makes viewing compelling. The wealth of extra features included make this an exceptional value too. For the fans and the curious, one can't go wrong trying or purchasing this cult television classic now available digitally on iTunes..Score: 5/5

OMG this is an amazing deal!First, I am an American, and I absolutely LOVE this BBC Adaption! It is the only TRUE adaption of the radio programme and book(s). My sole complaint is that the BBC didn't continue the story beyond the Restaurant at the End of the Universe. I literally just discovered this version today, as I already have it on DVD(minus the plethora of bonus material) and previously owned the VHS version(the "Special Edition" of which only contained a short "Special Edition message from Douglas Adams" at the beginning of the first tape). I haven't hit the "Purchase" button so fast on anything in years! While I don't know if the $9.99 paid was a discount or not, I know a fantastic deal when I see one, and this clearly fits the definition. The series itself is well worth the purchase price, and the bonus content is absolutely amazing! I see one reviewer complained about this being in SD only. It was filmed in 1980-81 for television, and without someone like George Lucas mucking about with it, SD is where it will (and should) stay. All of the wonderfully campy special effects being changed, even by digital "improvements" would be doing the series a severe diservice. The visual effects still work well, and honestly, where they "come up short" compared to more modern effects, it accentuates the silliness and campiness of the story and the era in which it was made. Tampering with any of that would be blasphemous. Much like Monty Python, it works perfectly in context. You wouldn't go adding in a digitally made sword fight any more than you'd put Arthur on an actual horse. The humour still stands up, and I find myself laughing even though I've seen this many, many times. Hell, I often find myself speaking the lines right along with the show, except for where I'm laughing out loud. My wife believes I have gone completely mad, and she may not be wrong about that. No, strike that. She's completely right about that. Proof is that I paused the show to come write this review. If you don't mind, I'll end this now and go back to watching it. If you like British comedy, especially from the 70s-80s era, you should enjoy this. If you do, and don't, well, I don't know what to tell you. Bugger off, or something..Score: 5/5

I have the old DVD discs, and they are acceptable quality, and better quality than the shown clips available here. Reading other reviews, it appears the quality is as equally poor when purchased and does not improve. I will not rate anything 5 stars if the product is poor quality.
