Deep and Entertaining, Even If It’s BiasedIn a way, The Last Dance can be considered simply, a Michael Jordan puff piece. And in some ways, the bias towards MJ and his influence on the documentary shows. However, Jason Hehir’s thrilling direction and edit of this miniseries and the fascinating behind-the-scenes look at the 1997-98 Chicago Bulls vastly overshadow any flaws this has. 9/10.Score: 5/5

1Episode One (The Last Dance) recap, spoilers

Episode One

19 April 2020$2.99

In the fall of 1997, Michael Jordan and the Chicago Bulls begin their quest to a win a sixth NBA title in eight years. As the first episode of "The Last Dance" lays bare, the path to another ring would be paved with obstacles and subplots. And with the long-awaited unearthing of exclusive, extensive footage shot by a film crew that season, the tension and conflict that defined that final championship run is very much on up-close display. The episode chronicles the disintegrating relationship between the team and the front office; Jordan, his teammates, and coach Phil Jackson on one side, and general manager Jerry Krause on the other.

2Episode Two (The Last Dance) recap, spoilers

Episode Two

19 April 2020$2.99

Michael Jordan was the defining presence of the Chicago Bulls dynasty in the '90s. No one ever took a more competitive approach to every game of an NBA season than Michael Jordan, and there's no doubting Scottie Pippen's indispensability at his side. But as Pippen emerged as a future Hall of Famer, he was also underpaid, thanks to a long-term contract he signed with the Bulls in 1991 – a deal team owner Jerry Reinsdorf was unwilling to renegotiate. And so, in 1997, a disgruntled Pippen elects to wait until just before the season starts to get foot surgery, leaving Jordan without his sidekick, and making the first portion of the year all that more difficult.

3Episode Three (The Last Dance) recap, spoilers

Episode Three

26 April 2020$2.99

There's never been a player in NBA history quite like Dennis Rodman. And when the star rebounder, defender, and provocateur joined the Chicago Bulls for the second half of their run of dominance, the fit proved to be just about as perfect as it was unlikely. By the 1997-98 campaign, though, Rodman is on Jordan's side, and all the more essential with Scottie Pippen out for the first few months of the season. After a rocky start, Rodman helps Jordan turn the Bulls around and get them to the top of the Eastern Conference by the time Pippen returns. Even then, though, the same question always lurks: When will "the Worm" next combust – and will the next implosion take down the Bulls' bid for a sixth title?

4Episode Four (The Last Dance) recap, spoilers

Episode Four

26 April 2020$2.99

As the 1997-98 season began, the Bulls team received their season handbook with one phrase - “The Last Dance” - from head coach Phil Jackson. His path went from growing up in Montana to playing in the NBA in New York, before eventually becoming a coach with the Bulls. In 1989, general manager Jerry Krause replaced Doug Collins with Jackson, leaving Jordan hesitant to commit to a new team-oriented offense – the “Triangle.” In Jackson’s second season, the Bulls finally get past the Pistons before beating Magic Johnson and the Lakers for the franchise’s first NBA title. Seven years later, the Bulls were chasing their sixth title amidst tension with the front office.

5Episode Five (The Last Dance) recap, spoilers

Episode Five

03 May 2020$2.99

As the most recognizable and popular cultural figure in the world, Michael Jordan's marketability was undeniable, although questions arose over his apolitical positioning. The marketing effort began at the start of his NBA career after he signed an endorsement deal with upstart Nike that featured the "Air Jordan" shoe. All of it was amplified by his success on the "Dream Team" at the 1992 Olympics. While he established himself as the unquestioned best player in the world, his competitive fire was ignited by Croatia's Toni Kukoc, the player who Bulls general manager Jerry Krause drafted and saw as the future of the Bulls, despite having just won their second straight NBA title.

6Episode Six (The Last Dance) recap, spoilers

Episode Six

03 May 2020$2.99

It was no secret how much Jordan loved to compete – and how far he'd go to win. Sam Smith's book The Jordan Rules covered how difficult Jordan could be as a teammate. Jordan's competitiveness continued off the court as well. Controversy surrounding his gambling habits arose during the 1993 Eastern Conference Finals, when he was spotted late at night in a casino in Atlantic City. But the uproar only fueled his fire. After going down 2-0 in the series, Jordan led the Bulls to four straight victories over the Knicks to earn a third straight trip to the NBA Finals. After beating Phoenix for the title, Jordan's exhaustion was apparent, as he dropped hints that he might be ready to step away from the game.

7Episode Seven (The Last Dance) recap, spoilers

Episode Seven

10 May 2020$2.99

The Nets remind the Bulls in the first round of the 1998 NBA playoffs that the road to an NBA title isn't easy. Five years earlier, after the Bulls won their 3rd title, there was no doubt Michael Jordan was exhausted. That summer his father was murdered, and soon after, Jordan walked away from the NBA to fulfill the dream his father had – being a baseball player. While Jordan was toiling at the Double A level in Birmingham, the Bulls went on to win 55 games in the 1993-94 season before being eliminated in the Eastern Conference Semifinals by the Knicks. As was clear throughout the Bulls dynasty, leadership is not easy – and in 1998, the now 35-year-old Jordan is as tough as he's ever been on teammates.

8Episode Eight (The Last Dance) recap, spoilers

Episode Eight

10 May 2020$2.99

In the 1998 playoffs, former teammate B.J. Armstrong made the mistake of provoking Michael Jordan, who responded with a dominant performance to polish off Armstrong's Hornets. It was yet another example of Jordan's competitive edge. A few years earlier, the Major League Baseball players' strike put Jordan's dreams of getting to the big leagues on pause. In the late winter of '95, cajoled at first by Armstrong, his basketball fire was soon stoked – and on the third weekend in March came that famous faxed press release: "I'm back." When the 1995-96 season began, Jordan looked more driven than ever, and the Bulls went on to complete the most dominant NBA season ever on their way to a fourth championship.

9Episode Nine (The Last Dance) recap, spoilers

Episode Nine

17 May 2020$2.99

The incredible challenge of winning a 6th title in 8 years only grows more challenging the closer Michael Jordan & the Chicago Bulls get to the ultimate goal in the spring of 1998. In the Eastern Conference Finals, the Bulls face off against the Indiana Pacers – an opponent that Jordan would call the toughest out of all of Chicago's challengers in the East. Sure enough, after the Bulls win the first 2 games at home, Reggie Miller comes back to lead the Pacers to a Game 3 win, and then nails a 3-pointer in the final second of Game 4 to even the series. The Pacers would push the Bulls to just the 2nd seven-game series of their dynasty. In a punishing Game 7, the Bulls make a late run and ultimately prevail.

10Episode Ten (The Last Dance) recap, spoilers

Episode Ten

17 May 2020$2.99

In June of 1998, Michael Jordan & the Chicago Bulls take on the Utah Jazz in an NBA Finals rematch, looking for a 6th championship and a perfect ending for "The Last Dance." They take a 3-1 series lead before the Jazz send it back to Utah. In Game 6, Chicago is down 3 with 41 seconds to go when Jordan turns in a masterful final tour de force. He made a layup to cut it to 1, stole the ball from Malone, and then, with 5 seconds left, hit a picture-perfect jumper to put his team ahead, giving him 45 points on the night. Moments later, the Bulls had their 6th title. The quest was complete. Jordan went back into retirement with his perfect record in the NBA Finals intact, and the legacy was sealed for all-time.
