A search for a missing father turns into an otherworldly trip. Based on the 2016 novel by Matt Ruff, this HBO drama series follows Korean war vet Atticus Freeman (Jonathan Majors) as he joins his friend Letitia (Jurnee Smollett) and his Uncle George (Courtney B. Vance) on a journey across 1950s Jim Crow America in search of his father (Michael Kenneth Williams). What follows is a struggle to survive and overcome both the racist terrors of white America and the terrifying monsters that could be ripped from an H.P. Lovecraft paperback.

Great show. Ignore the HatersThe show is weird, and who cares the main characters are black in a racial set America. It has nothing to do with racial divide, there are vampires, ufos, witchcraft, voodoo, ouija boards, ghosts, bloodlines. 1st episode is fantastic, and Leti is a gorgeous, great actor. Picked up the season for $14.99 even though I can watch it on HBO Max it’s worth contributing to the next season..Score: 5/5

Sad and tediousWhile Lovecraft wrote some of the most amazingly scary stories, this attempt to visualize his work is tortuous to watch, and rife with racist undertones, which truly take away from the story. While the story unfolds during a time of racial discord, the Lovecraft stories I read never broached this subject. Every episode focuses on the racial difficulties of the time and maybe 20-30% of the story touches on Lovecraft stories and lore. When they focus on the Lovecraft storyline, it’s impressive. Lovecraft would be spinning in his grave.I didn’t get past the third episode honestly. For good reason this is utter rubbish. If you are in anyway a fan avoid. Poor acting wooden acting and scripts that could have been written by a 10 year old writing a Halloween story for school..Score: 1/5
TerribleI found this series in poor taste with wooden acting and terrible CGI affects. Watching this series after reading the novels it’s a shame they have ruined it like this. I felt like I was watching a BLM protest. I only made it to episode 3 then gave up - such a shame this could have been good!.Score: 1/5
Good adaptionThe book provides shocks aplenty and when I heard that it would be adapted - I was unsure it would match the power of the novel. It did and more! Expanding the story further and tweaking some elements of the original story so that it’s fresh for people who have read the book - this really is must see especially in the current climate. All the characters are suffering from some element of discrimination - whether it’s racism, sexism or homophobia - and to convey that through a sci-fi / horror lens is inspired. Very good acting, with all actors drawing out the nuances of their characters really well. Highly recommended!.Score: 5/5

Bizarre twists and turnsIt wasn’t what I expected, but really loved it for what it is. It’s like Buffy for grownups, but with a social conscience. The monsters are fun and creepy, but it’s the racial hatred that truly provide the shocks. Can’t wait for season 2.Score: 5/5

Unexpectedly PleasantSeeing the artwork a while ago, I was so excited for this... It’s not rubbish, but it’s not mind blowingly amazing... The acting is superb, especially from the two leads, and the effects are incredible. (Although I didn’t know what I was scared more of? (Racist America or those monsters?!?!)
