Don’t buy The plot is bad

- Great episode5 star

Jodies great f the haters

- Captain Jack and Daleks!5 star

I enjoyed this episode more than a decent number of the season 10’s episodes. I felt it captured more of the adventure and swagger of the previous doctor. Captain Jack is also a treat, but would have loved to have more Torchwood Easter Eggs. Could we see a revival?

- Missing Post-Credits Scene?4 star

I’ve read about and just seen the post-credits scene for this episode. I won’t give away what’s shown in it, but have to ask why it isn’t included in the episode I purchased on iTunes? I’m sure it’s just due to all-too-human error, but still, please update the episode.

Lame

- Not good1 star

Longtime fan, the episode is terrible. Disappointed I had to wait 9 months for this ep. Always good to see Capt Jack, skip the rest.

- Great episode!5 star

Awesome to see Jack again, sad to say goodbye to some of the fam but a nice parting that we might get to see them again.

- High hopes for captain Jack3 star

First off, I paid for this (as I have all of them since series the reboot) as BBCA insert so many commercial breaks it makes it hard to follow the plot. So what’s the first thing I see when I turn on my purchased from iTunes New Year’s special? An ad, and one that I can’t skip, we are not amused. I had really high hopes that the return of Captain Jack would bring back some of the magic and in small ways he did, it was great to see Captain Jack again. After dragging through the beginning I am happy for the return but just a bit disappointed again in the writing. Where is the fun where is the humor where is the magic?

- No Show (then did)4 star

I waited all New Year’s Day for this to show. Nothing. Huge disappointment. Great way to start the year Apple. So 20 minutes after I wrote that it showed. I watched it was well done. I like when Jack Shows. Was a bit sad. Looking for a bit of hope in these times, but that might be asking a bit much from my old friend the doctor. To all the creators, have a healthy happy new decade. Keep your circle close in your heart and far from danger. Stay blue.

- Jan 02 ..... and not released1 star

Sigh

- I liked this one5 star

The writing has been dodgy these past few seasons but I really liked this one. I’ve always loved this group of actors and Jack is a welcome addition. I love this show so much.

- Great special. Action packed5 star

Jack saves the day again!

- I love the new Doctor but when will I get to see this?5 star

OK, I’m waiting for my content. People are already writing reviews and making podcast about this New Year’s Day episode. It’s New Year’s Day. Where is it?

- Where’s the episode?1 star

Bought the pass, but got no episode. All there is available to view is a trailer. Not cool at all.

- Always available late1 star

I’ll review again when I can actually watch the episode. But It’s beyond me why people who pay for the episode have to wait a day or two after it has aired to watch it. Just release it at the same time. The pirates have it before the legitimate purchasers.

- Where is the episode?!1 star

...

- Tedious1 star

All the fun has been lost, this special looks just as dismal and terrible as the rest of the Jodie episodes. My New Years Day wish is that Mrs. Who and her awful ‘fam’ all stay locked up in that Dalek prison forever and never come back. Or... it was all a bad dream and the real Dr. Who (Tennant/ Smith/ etc.) wakes up and saves this show before it’s too late.

- HOPE IT WILL BE IN 16/93 star

Hope we will have full screen episode with a 16/9 screen like it is in original international... it's more confortable and spectacular! Don't like the black screen on top and bottom ! Very impatient to look the episode :D !

- Can’t wait for this to air on New Years Day!5 star

I love Doctor Who and the thirteenth doctor does an amazing job! Thanks to Jodie for bringing the doctor alive in a new way. There is a huge surprise for doctor who fans of captain jack !

- Love Doctor Who 135 star

The writing is fresh & always keeps you guessing with the right amount of humor, angst & (2) heart! Scary, smart, with friends “Fam”ily to share the worlds with, save people & beings with you always wanting more! Great Show!

- Where is doctor? I only see nurse1 star

Baffled... Show self-destructed

- I don’t know3 star

I haven’t watched any of it. Just wanted to add to the one single review.

TONY DAVE X - Fun & exciting, solid action adventure.5 star

A fun action adventure, a slick looking production and great performances from the cast - including one happy reunion, one tense reunion and some sad farewells. If you like sci-fi and want to be entertained, I recommend this.

Poopyapp - Hahahahahahahahaha1 star

Hahahahahahahahahahaha

Jess-Jess-Jess - Not Sorry.5 star

The vast majority (if not all) of the people who rated this one star are sexist and/or racist. Doctor Who has always had political overtones. Literally think about the Cybermen for more than one second. Here I’ll give you a hint - every Cyberman looks the same and is equal. If you didn’t notice either you need to start looking closer at the content you consume or you willingly overlooked them. Doctor Who has always had some bad writing/effects (not saying this episode is an example of either but some people are). It just never seemed to bother anyone when the main actor was a white guy.

Callum McPherson - One of Jodie's best yet5 star

I've been thoroughly enjoying the Thirteenth Doctor's era and this episode was no exception - in fact, it's one of my favourite outings of hers so far. There's a few plot points I would have liked to have seen explored further, but the brilliant character interactions more than make up for that.

NEOBORG - Not good enough.1 star

This is a half hearted special. They are known for being cheesy at Xmas/New Year. This was just off. Jodie’s acting capabilities have been and are wasted in this episode. Scenes felt incomplete and most certainly rushed. This may have been better if they had extended scenes allowing for plot development and maybe to have had a Xmas day and New Year special. Making it a two part story. Don’t buy, you will only wish you didn’t. It just wasn’t good enough.

karl76uk - Same old1 star

Unfortunately same old story rehashed again and again. The BBC needs to go ! Stop the unfair large corporation tax. Give people the choice if they want it or not. Instead of a program that used to be amazing being use to force political rubbish down peoples throats.

Yondan - Terrible1 star

Don’t waste your money. Wait until they replace this terrible version of the Dr.

ourmutualfriend1313 - Shockingly Low Bar1 star

If you like to see old episodes of decent Doctor Who dismembered, eviscerated and stitch back together to make a bloated decaying corpse then this is the Doctor Who for you. Production values are relatively high. John Barrowman is fun. The guest cast are an improvement. There are just two bars to entertainment: 1. The regular cast are devoid of talent and charisma. The Doctor herself being a literal black hole who gurns her way through each episode with all the gravitas of Richard Richard from bottom. 2. The incredibly poor scripting which has an air of ‘whatever, this will do...’ about it. Pretty abysmal. Save your cash.

gamma9219 - PC brigade in control1 star

Worst Doctor Who so far - the acting was more plastic than normal especially the British PM and the American guy - the special effects - well errrrrr they werent special at all the BBC must have had big budget cuts extra cheap effects totally pathetic - the PC brigade BBC have ruined a once great show with unnecssary boring chat scenes trying to brain wash people yet again - pity as BBC have ruined a once great show - dread to think what the new series will be like!

Scousegeek - Best Dalek Episode In Years & Poignant Farewell5 star

Unlike many other reviews and ratings, I am writing this after actually seeing the episode - how people can rate 1 star and slate it before the episode has either aired on TV or been made available on any media is a mystery to me! I hope people who have fallen out of love with Doctor Who for whatever reason give it another go - I thought season 12 was a real step up and this New Year special filmed before the pandemic was the icing on the cake which we were lucky to get! The story is both a continuation of last years New Years special (which is recapped briefly at the beginning) and also the end of season 12 where we last saw the Doctor imprisoned by the Jadoon and her companions back on Earth in another Tardis they don’t know how to use. Chris Noth reprises his role billionaire Chris Robertson who is using Daleks (or so he thinks) for financial gain and he is joined by Dame Harriet Walter who is using them (or so she thinks) for political gain. The companions all know there is trouble afoot and try to warn Robertson, but their attempts are futile without the help of the Doctor. Enter Captain Jack, returning after the brilliant John Barrowman’s brief and unexpected cameo in season 12. Can he help reunite The Doctor with Graham, Ryan and Yaz to help save the Earth once more? The Daleks pose a far more sinister threat in this episode and are truly scarier than they have been for many years. The only negative I can share is that the threat is neutralised far too quickly and this story could have easily benefited from being a 2-parter and expanded the story. On a sadder note, we say goodbye to part of the TARDIS team towards the end of this episode and although I think they will be missed, this show has always been about change and the reason it has lasted over 57 years is because of this constant evolution and reinvention. It was a nice touch to end the episode back where the journey began back in The Woman Who Fell To Earth. Finally, stay tuned until the end of the credits when the next companion is introduced, a very familiar face for viewers in the UK! Overall, a great episode. Jodie Whittaker knocks it out the park as usual conveying the Doctors emotions with great subtlety at times and unable to hold back at other times! Hoping for more of this in season 13! One note to BBC & Apple - I watched this on iPlayer in 4K HDR and it looked amazing, from the opening titles which appeared to explode off the screen through the whole episode. Can 4K HDR episodes be made available as an option for purchase on iTunes where available?

davidb51 - Why does Apple allow reviews/ratings pre TX?5 star

The best episode of the Chibnall era so far... great production design, good performances and a clear storyline.

Moshferatu - Special Meh1 star

If this was SPECIAL, I missed that. This was just another poor story from the ‘Chibs’ & ‘TFFDKPBJW’ era, a mash-up of many older episodes in one story sequence. Pretty much everyone was dull, theres no chemistry between the so-called ‘Fam’ and poor use of Captain Jack and the Torchwood references. If this is hailed as a return or good storytelling, then clearly you've never understood storytelling. At least it was down on the WOKE, tho where WHO goes from here is anyones guess, can it get worse? Bring back great stories and cheap sets. Bring back a DOCTOR with true character. Bring back the WHO and rid us of this clearly awful time…

AndromedaElle - Welcome back Captain Jack4 star

[SPOILERS] Enjoyable xmas special - glad to see Captain Jack back, and a sad but nice farewell to a couple of the Fam. Looking forwards to next season, and hoping to hear more from Jack (and Gwen?!)

Shellsh0cked - Not worth one star.1 star

Don’t waste your time with this BBC rubbish. All PC and no story, it’s all what’s wrong with the entertainment industry today.

GingerAnimator - Great Episode5 star

Whatever your thoughts on Chibnall, you have to hand it to him that he understands the classic villains of the show more than his predecessor. And the bombastic tone he brings to the Daleks is a great joy. (I only wish it was available in 4K like it is on iPlayer)

Stuwolf44 - Was it worth the wait3 star

This is a review of the New Years Day episode of Doctor Who.This was the only thing I wanted to watch at Christmas and well.Mixed feeling about it.The positives first.Captain Jack Harkness was the best thing in a poorly written episode.Bouncing around and saving the Doctor.Tosyn Cole as Ryan,I will miss is character. The new Daleks I like but got destroyed by the old ones because they wasn’t pure.Again too easy for the writer.A few little jokes that I did laugh at.The brilliant Asian girl is staying and is well played by the actor. The negatives now.The charcater who was a bit like Elon Musk.A nasty man but kept alive. There was a lot depressing killing of people. After a year of Covid-19,do we really need that.Graham plat by Bradley Walsh.I was hoping he got exterminated,no luck there. The Doctor played by Miss Whitiker.Again she goes about just been a female doctor.Previous actors have made that role their own.The writer Chris Chibnall can’t write proper Doctor Who.Too easy written by number and rehashed old stories too. Then the biggest shock at the end of the episode.John Bishop as Dan The White Van man,I was physically sick to see that announcement.I fear for my Favourite All Time program.Purchacing this episode is not a must for me.

time out of my mind - horrible episode wish I hadn’t wasted my money1 star

so sick and tired of daleks. completely played out. absolutely nothing of interest. waste of money. wish I hadn’t downloaded. so stale, especially with shows like star trek discovery to be watched.

Paul_H_01 - Great episode5 star

This year’s Special episode of Doctor Who is funny, exciting and somewhat emotional. Without spoiling too much we see an old friend return, a departure from the TARDIS team, some unexpected guest villains and the return of Chris Noth who really seems to be enjoying himself. For me personally this has to be one of the better episodes of Doctor Who from the 13th Doctor’s run… oh and watch the episode right up to the end as there is a post credits scene that sets up next season.

Hiscoredic - Don’t get suckered in1 star

Don’t buy this now. In past years this price has been for the trailer only, wait until the episode has aired.
