Monk, Season 5 Release Date and Synopsis

Multi-Emmy-winner Tony Shalhoub returns as obsessive-compulsive detective Adrian Monk for an all-new fifth season of Monk. An impressive lineup of guest stars includes two of Shalhoub's former co-stars: Stanley Tucci (Big Night), who plays a famous actor preparing to play Monk in a movie, and Steven Weber (Wings), who plays a radio shock jock that Monk believes killed his wife. Other challenges awaiting Monk in Season 5 include a San Francisco garbage strike, a 25-year college reunion, Monk going temporarily blind after witnessing a murder in a fire station, and the retirement of his trusted therapist, Dr. Kroger.

Everything You Need to Know About Monk, Season 5

An ex-cop suffering from obsessive-compulsive disorder solves crimes with various (and usually exasperated) sidekicks. The 'defective detective' may have an abundance of phobias (heights, crowds, and even milk), but also razor-sharp deductive skills, which he uses to help the San Francisco police with especially baffling cases.

Great show, needs to find it's balanceI just started serial-watching Monk a couple of months ago. I haven't watched any of the fifth season yet but have seen the first four. In the first couple of seasons it was definitely more crime focused, then they started to balance it out with more characterization in the second and third seasons. By season four they had swung around to a character focus, maybe to catch up with what had been lacking in the first 2-3 seasons. I enjoy learning more about the quirky characters in this show, but I do hope they try to keep a balance between the crime solving and the characterization in the fifth and later seasons. His psychological disorder has caused him to develop an abnormal fear of virtually everything: germs, heights, crowds ... even milk. Monk's condition cost him his job, but he's back as a police consultant despite the unique challenges he encounters in his everyday life. These challenges lead Monk to hire a personal nurse, Sharona Fleming (Bitty Schram), who is always there to offer her assistance, even with the simplest of tasks (including organizing his sock drawer). Sharona is Monk's own Girl Friday, an unlikely Dr. Watson to his Sherlock Holmes. Her less-than-subtle prodding helps keep the defective detective on track in his investigations, as well as in his efforts to convince Captain Stottlemeyer (Ted Levine) to allow him to return to the force.
