The legendary TV series is about Kolchak (Emmy Award nominee Darren McGavin), an intrepid reporter specializing in occult cases. In this dazzling series, Kolchak encounters a host of monsters and villains — ranging from werewolves to Satan worshipers to Helen of Troy! A great time with a great character, this must-see for fans of science fiction and horror remains a seminal cult hit and a landmark in television history that blazed a trail for such series as The X-Files and Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Created by Jeffrey Grant Rice.

The Night StalkerThis is one of the best horror TV shows, period. If you weren't born when it ran and ended after just one season (network TV suits were and are unusually dense), do yourself a favor and buy the season. Night Stalker introduced American audiences to a few monsters not in the standard American horror pantheon. The Rakshasa story still haunts me. Note, this is not the attempted "remake" of last year. No teenage angst and stupid conspiracy theories here. Hey Apple, when will the Night Stalker TV MOVIES - the ones that preceded the TV series, be available?!.Score: 5/5
I like the originalityI think Darrin McGavin is great. The show is dated so the effects aren't very good, but the stories are well written. This does seem to be an inspiration to the X-Files. What works with shows like Kolchak and the X-Files is the likeable main character/s. I.Score: 5/5

Love this, but where are origional episodes? This was an incredible series. It was far ahead of its time. I was very glad to see it in iTunes. I am however distressed that there are several early episodes missing that were really the best of the series. #1 was the original pilot episode (The Vampire in Las Vegas), and #2 (Jack the Ripper in Seattleās underground city). The Seattle one was the best episode they ever made. I think it may have been considered a Pilot as well. There was one other episode made before it became a series based in Chicago, but alas I canāt remember what it was about. Hopefully there are plans to bring these gems to iTunes soon..Score: 5/5
Great fun to watchDaren Mc Gavin as Kolchak, is the original intrepid, bungling, wise cracking monster hunter. The show is great fun to watch even though it shows its age a little with less than stellar special effects and a few sizable plot holes. In spite of these minor shortcomings it is a true classic with plenty of genuinely scary moments. Highly recommended..Score: 5/5

The WerewolfIf you like, the overworked, non-creative style of the old networks grasping at straws to keep the TV viewers interested than this is for you. The werewolf was so corny the producers themselves decided to show the monster from far away or up close for a brief second. To think I use to watch these episodes and think how cool they were. Totally unmissable. This 1974 ABC Series is monumental. It's origins lie in an unpublished novel The Kolchak Papers by Jeff Rice, becoming two TV Movies The Night Stalker (1972) and The Night Strangler (1973). Richard Matheson, of I Am Legend fame wrote both TV movies. In the history of SciFi/Fantasy genre TV, there have been few true Classic series. In pure SciFi it has to be Quatermass for starting the whole thing off, Star Trek for all of its formulaic weaknesses, Dr Who for all its inconsistencies (and a few brave words for Blakes 7) and the Twilight Zone for capturing the effect of Pulp SciFi in the televisual format. In Fantasy there are the UK giants of The Avengers, a TV show that plundered multiple genres with irreverance but which lived in the fantasy world after Series 3, and The Prisoner (such a colossus that nothing else has tried to copy or emulate it - until now, an good luck with that) and from the USA Kolchak, the titanic forefather of the X Files, of Threshold and now of Fringe. Involving excellent acting form an under-rated master of TV, plots that would not look out of place in both Science Fiction novellas and EC or Amazing Comics but filmed with a real feel for the darkness rarely seen on prime time US television.
