Everyone who works for Torchwood is young, all are under 35. Some say that's because it's a new science. Others say it's because they die young . . . but why? The team, led by the enigmatic, ever-watchful Captain Jack Harkness (John Barrowman, Doctor Who, De-Lovely), uses scavenged alien technology to solve present day crime — both alien and human. From an underground base built on a rift in time and space, Torchwood sets its own rules. Part X-Files, part Angel, Torchwood is the team we'd all love to be part of, where excitement comes before morality and the rules are made up as you go along . . .
Captain Jack Harkness is a man from the 51st century trapped in the past who leads the last remnants of the Torchwood Institute, a top secret British agency outside the government whose job it is to investigate alien goings on in the world, act in mankind's best interest, and, if needed, be the Earth's last line of defense.

Great Stories but Not Kid SafeRather expected a neat spinoff of Dr. Who but got a well produced but seedy syfy show. First couple of episodes hint at promiscuity and then it launches into some sex scenes which made my 16 yr old son say "awkward!" because he was watching with mom and dad. My reaction was "holy crap" as my two little girls were watching (10 and 12). So fast forward and no sooner than the heterosexual scene is past, there is man-on-man heavy kissing thing. My girls exclaimed "WRONG" and "ICK". Wife and son looked at me sideways. I must have missed the "seedy shock value" rating on this series. Pity as acting and directing is good had hoped it was family-safe. The sex scenes added absolutely no value to the story. On the high side it did open up a long conversation about promiscuity, prejudice, morals and Christian values for our whole family. On the low side, Torchwood earned itself an eject from the favorites list. Game over for Torchwood. :-( I really hope Dr. Who does not head in this direction. It has been a family safe show for decades and I hope it does not stop being so..Score: 1/5
ExcellentI, like many others, started in on this show from Doctor Who. I was just excited that there was a spin-off; I can never get enough of the Doctor. I was pleasantly surprised at the edginess that Torchwood has, it's not a family show. And it's so much more than a spin-off. It could totally hold its own. My favorite show of all time!- Review by a thirteen year old dudeTorchwood had me hooked from the first episode I watched- I think it was Reset in season 2- and I am its biggest fan! I love all of the episodes because of their ability to update Doctor Who with a slighty more gung-ho attitude and plenty of thrills! I can't wait for Children of Earth- which I know will be amazing- and my favorite episode is Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang due to Barrowman and Marster's terrific chemistry onscreen. "Dr. Who for grownups"The title for this review comes from what the producer, Russel T. Davies, says he has been explicitly told he cannot call Torchwood. I have to say that I have been a big fan of the Doctor for about 30 years. The silliness and bad special effects never bothered me, hell I even like some of the Colin Baker episodes (though I used to dream about inventive ways to kill his awful Companion—the worst in the history of the show). This show, though it is a spinoff, is not the Doctor. It is darker, often more horror than science fiction. Some of these stories are heartbreaking, and I contend that if you do not find yourself crying (or manfully-not-crying) during some, then you don't have a heart to break. Very briefly, Torchwood is an organization that attempts to lessen the impact of the time/space rift that runs through the center of Cardiff, Wales, by policing up any aliens, etc. that arrive through the rift. At the same time, they scavenge alien technology to build an arsenal that will hopefully help the human race through the very dark days ahead. “The 21st Century is when it all changes.” The leader is Captain Jack Hawkins, who fans of the newer Doctor Who series will recognize as the Time Agent from the 51st century who was one of the Doctor’s companions during the last half of the first season. He is charming, compassionate, arrogant, and as hard as you have to be to make the decisions that he has to make. He has changed somewhat since he was with the Doctor (and you will find out why ) but he is still Jack, still a product of his culture. I like to say he is not heterosexual or homosexual, he’s just sexual. In the first episode, he recruits Gwen, a Welsh police officer (who has a boyfriend of many years who is in many ways the quiescencial nice guy). She joins other 21st century “locals”: Owen, a driven medical doctor, who is very cynical and complains more or less continuously, Toshiko a brilliant mathematician and computer specialist who silently and hopelessly loves Owen, and Ianto who in the first few episodes is very much in the background. You will find out why fairly soon, and his character later comes into his own. It requires some finely crafted acting to make this show work. The relationship between Jack and Gwen, Jack and Ianto, and Owen and Tosh in particular, are expressed in nuance rather than in-your-face scenery ripping. Not that there is a dearth of scenery ripping. These are extremely intense stories that are most definitely NOT FOR KIDS. The language is sometimes raw, the violence is bloody, and the sex is sometimes good deal more explicit than that usually seen on network TV in the US, including romantic same-sex kissing. If any of the above bother you, you do not want this show. I love the interplay between events in the Dr. Who series and events on Torchwood as well. Like Doctor Who, this show floats at all times on a fountain of fundamental human decency. It’s going to be a difficult wait for Season 3..Score: 5/5

Not for sexually closed mindedOmce you get past and over the fact that the Mr. Harkness is OMNIsexual (falls in love to a man, woman, aliens, etc) then you'll find the true treasure hidden behind the very intriguing and curious actions Torchwood has. If you are uncomfortable about the prevelant adult themes of sexuallity beyond your own, this isn't a show for you. While I do agree that some of thrm might be unnecessary, if you watch it through, you'll realize that this aspect plays a role behind Mr. Harkness' story and the direction of character development. Anyways, I gave this five stars because of the unique take on the Doctor Who universe where Jack is on Earth being the hero while the Doctor is away. What makes Torchwood stand out is that it's not just another tv show... It's a tv show that thinks its really happening and relates itself to real life touching you in ways no other tv show can. If you ask me, sci-fi aspect is just a cherry on top. This show is mostly drama+action+mystery and some bits if being a thriller. Should you watch it? Well, the show can't please everyone. Not a doctor who style of showSince I LOVED the doctor who serie, I expected a lot from this. The show doesn't feel like doctor who, I was expecting them to fly in space and I think I remember torchwood in doctor who being like a flying city or something like that, but no. In this show, torchwood is just a small little underground hide out with only 5 people in it including Captaine Jack who seems like a completly different man from the one in doctor who and all these people do is run around the city stoping cheaply made aliens. Basically, pretty bad plot and acting, the effects are pretty crapy compared to doctor who and you won't feel the same way for the characters like you use to in doctor who. The way TV should beI absolutely hate when people criticize Torchwood for it's openminded outlook on sexuality. This is how TV should be. Any modern individual comfortable with their own sexuality should be able to watch two men (or two women) kiss. Love is not one dimensional-it is meant to be unique. There is nothing graphic or distasteful about the relationships portrayed on Torchwood. It shouldn't make anyone uncomfortable, and if it does, well maybe you should consider whehter you fall within the definition of homophobia. I loved every second of this show when I started watching. The characters are unique, the idea interesting, and the outlook modern. If you continue to watch the show, you will notice an improvement as the creators gained more confidence. The third series, which is a mini series titled "Children of Earth," had me enthralled. It was probably the most unique storyline involving an alien invasion. Torchwood is unique though especially when considering the American TV that is out there, which is usually very similar to another program, or even a new version of an old show..Score: 5/5
