Millions of Americans struggle with addiction. Most need help to stop. From compulsive gamblers to shopaholics to drug addicts, Intervention profiles people whose dependencies or compulsive behaviors have brought them to a point of personal crisis and estranged them from their friends and loved ones. Witness in Season 4 of this hit series the destructive behaviors of addicts including a 26-year-old in denial of her addiction to prescription drugs; a former DJ who every day risks permanent brain damage as a result of his hallucinogenic drug use; a soldier who served two tours in Iraq and is now a severe alcoholic coping with post-traumatic stress disorder; and a depressed young woman who has starved herself down to 90 pounds. At the end of each episode, the addicts will be confronted by family, friends and a professional interventionist and given a choice: go to treatment and get help or face exile and isolation from those who love them most.
Intervention is an American television reality show dealing with the struggles faced by many different kinds of addicts. Each episode follows one or two participants, each of whom has a substance dependence or other mentally and/or physically damaging problem. The subjects believe they are being filmed for a documentary on their problem, but their situations are actually being documented in anticipation of an intervention by family and/or friends. During the intervention, each participant is given an ultimatum: go into rehabilitation immediately, or risk losing contact, income, or other privileges from the loved ones who instigated the intervention. Often, other tactics are used to persuade the addicted person into treatment, which vary depending on the situation; some of these include threats to invoke outstanding arrest warrants, applying for custody of the addict's children, foreclosing on the addict's property, and break-up of marriages or other relationships. The producers usually follow up months later to monitor the addicted person's progress and film it for "follow-up" episodes of the series or for shorter "web updates" available on the show's website.

EPISODE 8 - BRADIf you are going to download 1 episode, or watch just 1 episode of this show, make it this one. The pain that this young man goes through is something no one could ever imagine. Being an Iraq War Vet and having PTSD and being addicted to alcohol, this episode is a SHOCKING wake-up call to America about a problem that is very real. Our young men and women are put into a war zone and come back totally changed and its HEART BREAKING to witness. I hope this episode sends a message to all who are involved that even though these young men and women are forced to see and do unspeakable things while in the Army, they are human, and shouldn't be forgotton or left behind. I wish Brad every success and hope he was able to overcome his addiciton..Score: 5/5

A Sad Eye OpenerI have been watching this program religiously for some time now. It is a sad reflection on the tragic lives of these lost people and what may have driven them to such despair. What stands out time and again is the dichotomy that exists with the addicts' families. On the one hand, I see a lot of love, sometimes completely overwhelming the person. It is amazing that the chain of affection is, in most cases, unbroken by a loved one's addictive behavior. On the other hand, it is telling how much negative early life experiences can have on a person and the path that his/her life takes. Broken homes, favoritism and just plain bad parenting can have lasting lifelong effects. And there is often the terror suffered by a young person who had to endure sexual abuse. We are only human, and sometimes seek whatever method we can to dull our emotional pain. Out of all the episodes, the one I can most relate to is Brooke. A chronic pain sufferer myself (though I don't take anywhere near the medications she did and have only one physician prescribing my pills), I saw the abject fear in her eyes when she walked in the Intervention Room and realized what was going on. I can totally share with her the danger of perhaps having to give up medication which is allowing her to function, albeit precariously. To have severe chronic pain and no way to relieve it is the most horrible situation that sufferers can contemplate. An excellent series that addresses not only addiction but the darker areas of the human soul. A great job done by all involved with this production..Score: 5/5

Well Done... But Sad and RepetitiveYou've read the description so you know what the show is about. I've only seen two shows so far - both were good but remarkably similar. It's so very sad to see anyone fall from grace into drug dependancy or some other trouble, but perhaps more so for those who really had everything to live for. The series does an excellent job at profiling the beginning parts of each story - how each life began with great expectations, surrounded by loving families and dreams... then they fall to temptation. The saddest part of the saga without question is the impact on the families who want to and need to love so much, but are so hurt by the actions of the son or daughter. I must say I didn't sympathize as much as I thought I would with those with the addictions - I just saw weakness, not addiction. Maybe that's unfair but it's difficult not to admit to this once you see the full episode. I don't know how many more of these I can watch, it's bound to get old. I can understand series like Cops where it's just comical, but this is just sad - over and over again. Try it a few times, but don't go for the series quite yet. I'm suprised to see they've had four seasons with this formula..Score: 3/5
