The Blue Planet Release Date and Synopsis

This definitive natural history of the world's oceans covers everything from popular shores and teeming shallows to the mysterious open depths. Two-thirds of the planet is covered by the oceans and yet they remain largely unexplored and certainly under-filmed. This series changes all that and subsequently changes our views of the deep. Advances in underwater photography has opened the doors to unknown territories never before explored.

A Breathtaking and Astonishing BBC Nature Series About The OceanBBC's Blue Planet is simply jaw-dropping. It is one of the greatest documentaries ever made on the ocean. The cinematography is astounding. This series has a lot of beautiful footage of the most impressive marine environments on Planet Earth. Various organisms such as fish, sharks, marine mammals, crustaceans, mollusks, echinoderms and medusa are all shown in this spectacular documentary series. All eight episodes are informative and fascinating, with wonderful cinematography, beautiful and diverse marine environments, incredible marine creatures, engaging music and nearly perfect narration. Polar regions, deep sea, coral reefs, islands, open ocean, and mangrove swamps are all covered in each episode. The subject matter is indeed enthralling and very well written. The visuals are absolutely striking and the background music is absolutely fantastic. David Attenborough does an excellent job as the narrator of this amazing series. Blue Planet is without a doubt the most stunning and amazing documentary series about the ocean that I have ever seen! From the open ocean to tidal pools, coral seas to the deepest darkest part of the ocean itself, the BBC takes the viewer on an almost magical journey through the ocean. Entertaining, and educational at the same time. There are so many wondrous things in the oceans that are worth protecting and that deserve a lot of appreciation from humanity. Highly recommended for anyone who is a fan of BBC's nature documentaries, who has a strong passion for nature and who wants to learn more about the ocean and protect marine life..Score: 5/5

Sir David Attenborough narrates this critically acclaimed series that dives deep into the marine environment of Planet Earth. Although two-thirds of the world's surface is covered with water, scientists know less about the oceans than they do about the surface of the moon. This limited series travels from various coasts to the poles to examine watery denizens ranging from the gigantic blue whale to microscopic coral polyps.

1The Blue Planet (The Blue Planet) recap, spoilers

The Blue Planet

12 September 2001$9.99

The blue whale is a perfect symbol for the oceans: the vast blue expanse that dominates our planet while still remaining largely unexplored and mysterious. Yet the oceans are an integral part of our lives. Their influence dominates the world's weather systems. They support an enormous range of life, from the largest whales to the smallest plankton, from hordes of sea birds to lonely, deep-sea fish. All this is governed by a complex system of biological and physical forces. This first episode demonstrates the sheer scale, power and complexity of the 'Blue Planet.'

2The Deep (The Blue Planet) recap, spoilers

The Deep

19 September 2001$9.99

We journey deep into the abyss to see strange creatures, many of which are new to science. Including terrifying fish with massive teeth that eat prey twice their size and weird jellyfish that flash in the darkness. Deep sea sharks never filmed before are revealed along with submerged mountain ranges and volcanoes far larger than anything on land.

3Open Ocean (The Blue Planet) recap, spoilers

Open Ocean

26 September 2001$9.99

The open ocean covers more than 360 million square kilometres. Much of this huge expanse of seawater is marine desert with virtually no sign of life. Yet somehow life survives out here. Among others, we follow the extraordinary life of the yellowfin tuna from a tiny egg to a 200 kilogram, voracious predatory giant.

4Frozen Seas (The Blue Planet) recap, spoilers

Frozen Seas

03 October 2001$9.99

Life on the edge of a frozen sea is tough. Pack-ice at both poles is constantly on the move, and in winter freezes solid. Only in spring, does life begin again. Plankton blooms and feeds vast hordes of migrating fish, birds, whales, seals and polar bears. Walruses rake the seabed for clams. But it is a brief respite, for the ice soon returns.

5Seasonal Seas (The Blue Planet) recap, spoilers

Seasonal Seas

10 October 2001$9.99

Sunlight is the vital source of energy used by the countless billions of plankton which live in the world's temperate sea. Forests of giant kelp harbour thousands of animals. Sharks, sea otters, brilliantly coloured anemones, squid and exquisite leafy dragons are just a few of the other creatures that live in this cool, rich water.

6Coral Seas (The Blue Planet) recap, spoilers

Coral Seas

17 October 2001$9.99

Coral reefs are the rainforests of the sea; they are rich oases of life. The competition is highly visible as brightly coloured fish compete for food, territory and mates. But the corals themselves are also dynamic. With incredible time-lapse photography we show the dramatic formation of a coral reef and its ultimate destruction.

7Tidal Seas (The Blue Planet) recap, spoilers

Tidal Seas

24 October 2001$9.99

Tidal marshes are among the most productive habitats in the world. Numerous plants support numerous animals, yet life is not easy. Relief comes with the crashing waves, as the tides flow once more. But between the tides, when the sands become depleted of food and air, the worms, clams and shrimps must endure the expected pause.

8Coasts (The Blue Planet) recap, spoilers

Coasts

31 October 2001$9.99

From the open oceans, millions of seabirds are forced to come onto land to breed. Sea eagles steal kittiwake chicks from their nesting ledges. Turtles lay their eggs in the sand and marine mammals haul themselves out to fight on the beaches. Sea-lions come ashore to give birth, but killer whales crash through the surf to snatch their young.
